Hi, to keep a long story short I broke my arch installation after installing the lutris flatpak last night and now nothing works properly. At first I was stuck with just a blinking cursor after typing in my encryption password but after that I ch-rooted into the system through a live USB to remove "quiet" from grub and then after regenerating it, I rebooted to see what was going on and here are the results .

After this it just stays at "Reached target Graphical Interface" and the cursor blinks. The amount of services failing seems to be random on every boot.
I can still switch ttys and log into my account and launch hyprland.
In hyprland, a bunch of things seem to be failing at random as well, for example, if I don't get the KDE polkit after launching hyprland, the wifi doesn't work even though before this I didn't have to type in my password into the polkit to access the wifi network at all.
If I launch Kitty it just crashes. I remember fish complaining about running out of space and making kitty crash before all this happened.
I can still use console (GNOME terminal) because I have GNOME and KDE installed along with hyprland. I'm not sure why it works, maybe it has something to do with the fact it's not GPU accelerated unlike kitty.
When I try to launch kitty from console, I get this.

If I try to reinstall NVIDIA graphics drivers, I get.

From fish. to a bunch of firefox extensions and lots of programs and things I type in the terminal too.
When fish told me that I was out of space for the first time, I immediately opened thunar to check how much space I still had and I had about 75GB left at the time.
Since then I've deleted a bunch of stuff and taken backups on an external drive so I have even more space free now.

/dev/mapper/root 2.00GiBI remember after I typed in systemctl reboot after lutris froze while trying to run God of War, because I didn't know how to force kill a process (I tride force killing it with mission center but it didn't work) so maybe this is all because the system powered off too fast and perhaps btrfs doesn't handle that too well but I really don't know.
I got a bunch of errors after I updated my system like the last time which I ignored but my system was working fine even after that and I rebooted after it a bunch of times too so I'm pretty sure it was lutris that did all this and not the update.
I have backups of everything now and I really don't mind reinstalling but I want to take this opportunity to learn more about arch as a whole by fixing it(or at least attempting to), that's why I'm here. Cheers.

Please don't embed huge images directly: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Genera … s_and_code
It does look like plenty free space right now, but the issue that likely happened during some update will likely have left broken files, do a
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
pacman -Qkk 2> /tmp/potentialissues.txt
curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st < /tmp/potentialissues.txtAlso generally speaking, you're aware that files aren't truly deleted in a snapshot enabled system unless you also remove it from the snapshot/how many snapshots do you have in general and can you get rid of them?
OT: But why would you opt for a lutris flatpak when a prefectly fine Arch package exists for it?
Offline
I'm sorry for embedding the images.
I don't have any snapshots, I don't even have snapper installed. I created the snapshot subvolume because I planned to set snapper up but I never got around to it.
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st < /tmp/potentialissues.txtThese two commands aren't working for me. After I hit enter the cursor just stays blinking but nothing happens after that. Should I just upload the output to pastebin?
OT: But why would you opt for a lutris flatpak when a prefectly fine Arch package exists for it?
Because I thought that since flatpaks are sandboxed and they tend to stay in the home directory so the damage they can cause is minimal and also because flatpaks tend to be more up to date compared to the arch repository and also some devs favor the flatpak versions of their software and recommend using them instead of the repo package. I know this is the case for bottles which I use to run all my games but I couldn't get God of War to run with it despite trying a bunch of different runners so I decided to give Lutris a shot.

Have you tried booting from a different kernel, i believe that ur issues are related to using the hardened kernel, this kernel is made with security as a goal but isn't really viable for what you want to do with your system, gaming on it won't be the best experience as it's pretty restrained and has software compatibility issues. With security comes inconvenience so you gotta asses what are your needs and how much security your really need. You can read more abt that in the archwiki security section as the wiki itself says that a system can be made unusable while pursuing security. Someone else might have a different opinioin but that's what i think is causing you all these issues.
Offline
Yes I've tried booting with all the different kernels. Even though I have four kernels installed I almost exclusively use the zen kernel, in fact I don't think I have ever used the hardened kernel. I just have it installed because I wanted to test it out someday.
Offline
V1del's command require network access.
If you don't have any network on that system, you can "sudo journalctl -b > /tmp/journal.txt" and usb-walk that along /tmp/potentialissues.txt to a system with internet connection.
Next to that, and because of recent flatschpak episodes, also post the output of "printenv"
Online
I'm aware that those commands require an internet connection and I had internet at the time that's why I asked if I could just upload the output to pastebin, maybe the website is blocking my ip.
Anyway I booted up today and everything seems to be working fine now even though I didn't really do anything besides install CachyOS on another SSD and test games on it and game for a while on Windows so I don't know what fixed everything.

Figure what went wrong, then inspect the status quo.
The journals of the previous boot(s) probably hold the answer.
Some guesses/observations.
You're using the dkms drivers, chances are you previously failed to build them (missing headers)
Another explanation is the hardened kernel - check the journal which one you were booting and which one you're booting now.
Flatschpak had screwed some XDG_DATA_DIRS, but yours includes the normal paths, so no danger from there.

You'd get a status code for that (russia is probably still 451), but do you live behind a great firewall?
Online
No I'm not behind any great firewall, I can visit https://0x0.st/ fine so don't know what's going on there.
I'm not using the hardened kernel either, I just have it installed and I use the zen kernel almost exclusively.
Where how and why are you setting those?
I was following the instructions given here, https://github.com/elFarto/nvidia-vaapi … -variables and from the Hyprland wiki and I'm setting them in /etc/environment or in the Hyprland config file in /.config.

Is this a hybrid graphics system and do you want to run it on the nvidia GPU intead of regular prime-fashion (only invoke the GPU for games etc)?
Online
It's a hybrid graphics system.
do you want to run it on the nvidia GPU intead of regular prime-fashion (only invoke the GPU for games etc)?
Whichever's best, to be honest. I think the latter will give me more battery life so that I guess.
Offline
Then get rid of all of those environments as well as DRI_PRIME=1.
For proton they will already select the dedicated GPU without any addition on your end, for native games you should install nvidia-prime and then use prime-run to launch the things you want on the dGPU on demand.

You mean I should remove all the ones in /etc/environment? I have nvidia-prime installed already and I use it sometimes

Yes. They steer the system to use the nvidia GPU.

You can upload them to termbin or pastebin if you cannot reach 0x0.st - maybe look at the filesize first (these services have quotas, 0x0.st quotas at 512MB where those files should be WELL < 5MB unless something went wrong)

The -Qikk output loks unsuspicious.
The journal shows you starting a hyprland session and connecting to the wireless AP within a second, no indication of any network failure.
1. apparmor
2. supergfxd
3. input-remapper-service
4. macchanger / macspoof@.service
All of which I can imagine causing trouble.
0. Just for good measure, add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters to make sure the card order won't get reversed.
1. disable apparmor (for now, I don't think it's gonna be the cause but we don't want to run into it either)
2. remove supergfxd, you're running it in hybrid mode which is (your previously stated preference and) equivalent to it not being there
3. The input-remapper-service related udev rules act up quite some because the daemon isn't running, the service tries to read "/root/.config/input-remapper-2/config.json" …
=> disable that. Do you intentionally use it? Has it ever properly worked (and indicated by what, ie. what does it achieve)
4. disable the macspoofing - the posted journal doesn't show any network issues but next to udev being lost in the input-remapper calls this is a likely contender for network issues
Which of the original issues have remained after cleaning up the environemt as V1del suggested?
Online
1. I've disabled apparmor now but through "systemctl disable apparmor", please let me know if I have to remove the kernel parameters associated with it as well.
2. Done.
3. I'm not sure about any udev rules created related to input remapper. According to the website, you just have to download the AUR package and enable the systemd service associated with it. Should I disable input remapper too? It's a very important tool for me, I use it to remap a lot of my keyboard and mouse inputs.
https://github.com/sezanzeb/input-remapper
4. Alright I've disabled it now but can I turn it back on again? I like having my mac address randomized.
Which of the original issues have remained after cleaning up the environemt as V1del suggested?
Nothing, everything seems to be working fine now except for this one thing. Almost every time I try to update my system I get a bunch of network errors like this but I had this problem before all this started too.

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. If I run the command again it works fine. Also I have update aliased to alias update='paru && flatpak update -y'. This updates the system, AUR packages and flatpaks one by one and I also have 20 simultaneous downloads set for pacman. I hope this isn't what's causing all the problems.
And just for clarification, everything became fine before I updated the environment variables as V1del suggested so I still don't know what fixed everything.

Almost every time I try to update my system I get a bunch of network errors like this but I had this problem before all this started too.
...error: failed retrieving file 'intel-ucode-20250211-1-any.pkg.tar.zst.sig' from london.mirror.pkgbuild.com : Operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds error: failed retrieving file 'kde-cli-tools-6.3.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst' from london.mirror.pkgbuild.com : Operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds error: failed retrieving file 'kwin-6.3.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst.sig' from london.mirror.pkgbuild.com : Operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds warning: too many errors from london.mirror.pkgbuild.com, skipping for the remainder of this transaction error: failed retrieving file 'xkeyboard-config-2.44-1-any.pkg.tar.zst' from london.mirror.pkgbuild.com : Operation too slow. Less than 1 bytes/sec transferred the last 10 seconds warning: failed to retrieve some files error: failed to commit transaction (unexpected error) Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. If I run the command again it works fine. Also I have update aliased to alias update='paru && flatpak update -y'. This updates the system, AUR packages and flatpaks one by one and I also have 20 simultaneous downloads set for pacman. I hope this isn't what's causing all the problems.
The errors look odd. Usually `pacman` will try another mirror if the one it is using is too slow or unresponsive. It doesn't give up because a single mirror is problematic. What is in your `/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist`?
20 simultaneous downloads sounds rather a lot to me. If you use the default settings and use `pacman` directly, do you the errors still occur or are you able to update in that case?
If you want to learn about your system and avoid problems, don't use paru.
Note that if you get these errors every time you update your system, you are not actually updating your system at all. (Unless `paru` updates some AUR packages regardless.)

I like having my mac address randomized.
If you can rule out the randomizer as root of your problems, sure.
But b/c or the hanging NM, maybe rather see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … domization instead of using a 3rd and pot. colliding services (all network managers basically assume exclusive control over your NICs, mixing them will require manual intervention)
Other than that see cfr's post and have a look at https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/reflector/

What is in your `/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist`?

The errors are there but if I run the command again it updates the system. Also pacman is really slow for me even if I have 2 or 3 packages downloading at once.

I've disabled mac spoofer now and I'm still getting the "A start job is running for Network Manager (x / 10min 2s)" error sometimes while booting.

That looks normal.
So do you get errors if you run pacman with default settings? Not paru and not with 20 simultaneous downloads .... Because the way `pacman` behaves for me is that it abandons the first mirror if it isn't working and tries the next. There would be no point in having 5 mirrors configured if it only ever tried the first.
The only time I've seen `pacman` fail for network reasons was when it wasn't possible to get a connection or to resolve an address at all. Otherwise, it is pretty robust - much more robust than some other tools I use.

Post the system journal for that boot (NM hanging w/ the macspoof enabled)

Have you tried reflector?
