[POLL] weechat vs. irssi

yes i know the new forum layout doesnt support polling. so vote by posting.
i am unable to decide on my own. thats why the poll.
i like irssi's simplicity and ready to use themes and scripts.
one the other hand weechat is highly configurable and u can make your own themes etc. plus u get a namelist without having a 2nd window

discuss

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

I use weechat - although I suppose I'm not the best for discussions of which is greater than which, since I've never used irssi.

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

I personally prefer irssi. I tried weechat for a day recently and ultimately went right back to irssi (not a knock on weechat, I just like irssi better).

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found.

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

The reason I like weechat is that it has "sane defaults".  Sure irssi is customizable to all hell, but by default it's a bit lame.  And you have to look all over the place for scripts to do some fairly typical things (i.e. colorize nicks).  weechat, with no config, is totally usable to me.

weechat here when no xchat is possible. like the splitted view. but i'm still looking for a switch in its rc file to disable all the "joins/leaves" messages.

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

Well, perhaps weechat's nicklist is better but the lack of one (The script that gives one is only half decent, I dont use it) hasn't bothered me as much as it did when I initially switched to console IRC client and IRSSIs script library is great and does most everything I want it to.

Also, every time I've used weechat I have not been able to /connect to other servers other than the default one. It just says it can't be reached and that the command could not complete or something. It won't work on arch or my ubuntu machine (Which sits in a cabinet and pretty much just runs IRSSI in a screen and MPD). I imagine it is just a stupid mistake on my part, but I couldn't figure out why I couldn't /connect so I just keep with IRSSI which treats me well enough so that I don't stress over weechat. Looks nice, but I'm too dumb for it so I vote IRSSI tongue

First off you shouldn't be editing the RC file directly.  weechat has a comprehensive config interface, and resaves itself when you exit.

IIRC "/ignore * join" and "/ignore * part" will do what you want.

You need to actually add the server before you can connect to it.  Try "/help server" for information on adding new server info.

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

I like weechat because writing a plugin is something they let me do in almost any dynamic language.

Including perl if you really need it.

Though, weechat does need built in theme support.

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

If you have any bug requests and/or feature reports tongue feel free to /j #weechat @ freenode. Btw, WeeChat will be refactored soon, so don't expect fancy features until autumn. SPOILER: then phracture will have to split weechat into 3 (or even more) packages

Re: [POLL] weechat vs. irssi

Qt is unlikely this year, so i think there will be: core, curses-gui, gtk-gui

Bullshit. I'm running it for months on my pentium-mmx 166MHz - it uses ~2% cpu and ~30Mb memory. CPU usage can be caused by bad scripts (there's memleak problem with some scripts).

2phrakture:
theme.py needs updating - several new look_ options were introduced since i wrote this script
In future (after gui/core split) curses ui will be improved to allow free formatting for bars

2weechat-newbies:
You should read at least QuickStart Guide - it's available in several languages (anyone to contribute more translations?) and contains answers to most frequent usage questions!
