texlive 2025

texlive 2025 is out fairly soon so I have some newbie questions.
- (native) installation guide (following the links to tug) suggests 'perl ./install-tl ...' #as root or ...; so I'm planing on doing that as root. reasonable?
- going with install as root: there are some directories that need to be added to environment variables.
-- so I'm thinking of doing that via sudo vim /etc/profile;
-- but looking at /etc/profile I notice '# Man is much better ... unset MANPATH' - so to add the textlive directory to MANPATH here I would need to comment out the 'unset MANPATH', so I just look at man on e.g. the net  via browser?

- there's a suggestion to leave old texlives in place for a while.
-- I probably wouldn't keep 2024 for very long, but while it's there just remove the directory entries from the environment variables so that the 2025 entries are used by default?

Any other general tips appreciated as my current texlive installation is less than optimal.

Thanks!

Edit: re the first question - I wonder if it might be a little safer, in theory, to install to a directory owned by a regular user (e.g. in Documents) and adjust the directories added to environment variables accordingly?

Re: texlive 2025

Why aren't you just using the distro packages?

Re: texlive 2025

Looking at 'Arch-packaged TeX Live vs native TeX Live' (Arch wiki, TeX Live) - I think native sounds like a better option for my intended use (I use at least one sty file that is regularly being updated).

Re: texlive 2025

If you insist on using the upstream over the arch packaging, i would suggest asking this question in a texlive forum

Thanks, only just saw this.
At this point I'm hoping I won't need to keep more than one installation - just leaving 2024 for a little while in case something's broken in 2025.
