Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=/dev/sda4 rw quiet video=DP-1:1366x768@60'
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux-lts.img

around 60 pixels from the left has been eaten I can't access this left region on my screen
while 1024x768 fit correctly, but't not the right screen resolution.

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

Do you have xf86-video-nouveau package installed? If yes, then better uninstall it.
And what is this:

(udev-worker)[272]: nvidia: Process '/usr/bin/bash -c '/usr/bin/mknod -Z -m 666 /dev/nvidiactl c $(grep nvidia-frontend /proc/devices | cut -d \ -f 1) 255'' failed with exit code 1.

It looks like you had nvidia binary driver installed, but did you uninstalled it completely (nvidia.conf file(s))?
If you use X server, post log from it.
Also, maybe this (tip on green): https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Nouveau#Early_KMS

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

I don't have package xf86-video-nouveau

But I've these ones :

lib32-libxxf86vm 1.1.5-2
libxxf86vm 1.1.6-1
xf86-input-libinput 1.5.0-1
xf86-video-vesa 2.6.0-2

Yes I've nvidia driver I've already said that
nvidia.conf ? nouveau not blacklisted
Any kernel before 6.6.6 kms works fine but higher I need to pass video parameter to the kernel
following by blurry screen and screen on the side.

around 60 pixels from the left has been eaten I can't access this left region on my screen
while 1024x768 fit correctly, but't not the right screen resolution.

Do you have to pass the parameter while booting? Other ways of configuring the resolution do not work also?

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

Remove xf86-video-vesa.
If you don't intend to use the nvidia-390xx drivers, remove all of those packages, make sure there's no residual kernel module in the initramfs (regernerate it)
If you do intend to use the nvidia-390xx drivers, make sure to install them all (and regenerate the initramfs) - nvidia-390xx-utils will blacklist nouveau.

Is the symptom wrt a display server (X11, wayland) or the console?
In case of X11, please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Also upload the outputs edid

cat /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-1/edid | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

I've two kernels I choose from at boot (grub)
lts > ramfs(without nvidia modules) + wayland stack
6.12.+ > ramfs(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_drm nvidia_uvm modules) + X11 stack

This problem never exist before last lts kernel 6.6.6

Remove xf86-video-vesa.
If you don't intend to use the nvidia-390xx drivers,

I use both.

I did edit the parameter in grub for testing stuff, I got the correct resolution on nouveau driver but the screen are 50 pixel to the left.

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

I use both.

You cannot use nouveau and nvidia at the same time and currently your installation is a frankenstein hybrid.

Either install the nvidia-390xx drivers or don't, "part of them" or "both, nouveau and nvidia" isn't an option.
Or, alternatively, if you want to discriminate by kernel, you'll have to remove the blacklisting modprobe.conf.d file from nvidia-utils and blacklist nouveau via the kernel commandline.

nouveau isn't blacklisted I checked all conf

I know It doesn't make sense but for me it does
I always hybrid between nouveau and nvidia using different ramfs
I'm 100% sure It's all because of kernel I think they drooped support for my old gpu on nouveau driver
It always worked before,
I switch when I want to test wayland stuff, but most time I spend on  x11 with nv driver

however I realize that video parameter isn't the correct method for the modset, & I've to move on,

Thanks.

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

modprobe -c | grep -v alias | grep -E 'nvidia|nouveau'

However, that's kinda the point, the journal in #3 in part runs into a conflict as nvidia and nouvea try to occupy the device.
You *WANT* to blacklist one or the other and if you want to discriminate their usage w/ the bootloader, the blacklisting has to happen at the kernel commandline.
Juggling stuff in the initramfs is not only unreliable but generally won't cut it here.

Then respond to the second half of #8 which you completely ignored and which addresses the issue w/ your monitor.

linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=/dev/sda4 rw quiet module_blacklist=nvidia,nvidia_modeset,nvidia_drm,nvidia_uvm

still the Kernel mode setting locked to 640x860 , never happened with any kernel blew 6.6.x

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

Also post the journal for that boot

    DTD 1: 1366x768 59.789541 Hz 683:384 47.712 kHz 85.500000 MHz (410 mm x 230 mm)
                 Hfront 70 Hsync 143 Hback 213 Hpol P
                 Vfront 3 Vsync 3 Vback 24 Vpol P

There was some other nouveau thread where the lack of nouveaudrmfb in favor of the simplydumb device the outpuot failed and nvidiaz only worked w/ the efifb on xga.
How does the system behave when actually using the binary nvidia drivers? Is the current problem limited to nouveau?

Also you've still not responded to the affected context and whether this is console only or the display servers (x11 & wayland) are also affected.
Neither have you posted an X11 log.

That log was on the rolling kernel with nvidia and x11 stack, Here on  lts + nouveau + wayland (current problem)
the file (( /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-1/edid )) is null

seth wrote:

ignore x11 It works fine with nvidia
my problem is nouveau kms + wayland

seth wrote:

Why I need to do that ? It's not X11 business, my problem with nouveau kms and wayland.

Re: Kernel video parameter (KMS) problem with nouveau

1. you've until just now not addressed what the concerned context actually is
2. the journal (and X11 log, in case that was a relevant context) will be necessary for any informed comment. How are we supposed to know why "itsdoesnotsworks lol".

You *do* have those logs, and they'll tell us what's going on - or you, if you read them.
