I'm using a wireless headset (WF-1000XM5 if it makes a difference).
I'm having issues with the headset seemingly randomly switching to HFP from A2DP.
Here's what I observed so far:
- when using firefox it seems to be fine
- continuous listening seems to be fine
- using any electron-based app seems to have issues switching over (sound tends to play over speaker instead of headphones sometimes)
- after some time of no playback (headset on table, not in case) it switches to HFP
- if I manually select sound output/input in electron based apps it switches to HFP
Switching back to A2DP seems to be problematic:
- using gnome-settings to do so sometimes does nothing (output stays on HFP, UI shows A2DP until changing tabs)
- sometimes gnome-settings seems to switch to A2DP, but there's no sound, from any application, including the sound test in gnome-settings
- using pavucontrol configuration -> profile seems to always switch to A2DP, but usually results in no sound output as above
Sometimes disconnecting bluetooth helps and headphones automatically connect via A2DP (or switch quick enough not to notice), reboot when this happens seems to resolve the issue as well, I have yet to test toggling system bluetooth to fix it.
How do I prevent headphones from going into HFP mode? How do I fix A2DP not being selectable/not working?

There are a couple of threads here suggesting kernel regressions, test linux-lts

Thanks, this has helped somewhat, now at least after a quick reconnect the A2DP sync works correctly, but it still seems to lose audio capability when I change teams/google meet to use the headset mic instead of "system default" (which is for some reason the laptop mic instead of the headset, while for speakers the headset is the default)
