[solved] steam games do not run […] via nvidia prime with proton 5.0…

none of my steam games work via nvidia prime with proton 5.0-10 or higher. they do work with previous proton versions, up to 4.2-9, but doing so comes with its own set of problems. i want to figure out why they don’t run with higher proton versions and fix that, and i need help debugging.

what happens is: i can launch the game via the ‘play’ button – so then it appears to be running and the ‘play’ button turns to a ‘stop’ button – but no window is ever opened for the game. this is the output when launching skyrim: special edition with launch options `prime-run %command%` set: https://pastebin.com/sG6FVU8p

i run this on a machine with an integrated radeon graphics unit on its processor by amd and an nvidia gtx 770 as a dedicated video card. (i know it’s an old card still using the kepler architecture.) i have installed the respective drivers `nvidia-470xx-dkms` and `nvidia-470xx-utils` for it from the arch user repositories. i do not know which other drivers could be necessary for the game to run, so i’ve installed some, see the output of `pacman -Q | grep -E 'vulkan|opengl|nvidia'` here: https://pastebin.com/02FctdX3

my screen is connected to a video output port of my integrated graphics unit (which is to say to a video output port of my mainboard). with `nvidia-prime` i can successfully offload to the dedicated video card, so `prime-run glxgears` works and `prime-run vulkaninfo` gives correct information about my gtx 770. i can successfully run native linux games (such as openmw) on it via `prime-run` and i can also successfully run steam games via proton versions up to 4.2-9. this only happens for all steam games i own with proton 5.0-10 or higher.

this is on arch linux with kernel `6.12.17-1-lts`. running `lspci -k` confirms that the gtx 770 is recognised with `nvidia` as kernel driver in use. no surprise here, i am able to run some games with it after all. it does however list `nouveau` as a kernel module for it alongside `nvidia` and `nvidia_drm`, even though no nouveau driver is installed anymore.

update, 2025-03-03, 14:50: in the linked reddit post, someone suggested that my “gpu is simply too old”, as it’s no longer supported by dxvk, which is part of proton, so later proton versions use later dxvk versions, at one point no longer supporting my kepler architecture video card. he was referring me here: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/wiki/Driver-support

the issue is resolved: the reason for the failure to show the running game is, apparently, that the kepler architecture is not supported by more recent versions of dxvk, used by more recent versions of proton – either that alone or in combination with the use of nvidia prime.

one can address the problem by using proton-sarek, a special proton version for guys like me who have an old video card that only supports legacy vulkan, see https://github.com/pythonlover02/Proton-Sarek. credits go to liam-dgol of r/linux_gaming for telling me this. apparently, proton-sarek recognizes und utilizes the video card on its own, one doesn’t need to invoke `prime-run` with it. in fact, doing so still gives the same problem of not showing the running game.
