[Question] Current best practice for RDP like remote access?

Hi, I have an installation with SDDM/KDE Plasma as my desktop environment.

Sometimes, I want to run some GUI tools remotely, but I’m not satisfied with the options I’ve tried.

I know Plasma has its own RDP service, but it doesn’t work well. It’s either not started (since I’m not logged in) or the connection can’t be established from my Ubuntu laptop due to missing H.264 support.

Currently, I just start Weston with an RDP backend. This feels like a clunky workaround.

I also tried XRDP + VNC and occasionally got a Plasma desktop, but it feels like I’ve installed a completely separate (X-based) window setup. Sometimes it didn’t work at all until a reboot. This might obviously be an issue caused by myself.

Is there a more elegant solution?

Re: [Question] Current best practice for RDP like remote access?

Hi,

I use x11vnc as the vnc server and Tigervnc's viewer (vncviewer) for client connections. I don't expose the vnc port, opting instead to tunnel it over ssh.

This approach has worked solidly for me for the past year or so. Prior to that I was using remmina for the client application. About a year ago I started having problems using remmina as the client application, most disturbingly, when connecting to hosts that were running Windows VMs.
