I've installed arch on a new laptop and I'm trying to get the audio to work but am unable to get ALSA to make a sound.
I'm following the ALSA article (alsa-lib, sofi-firmware, alsa-firmware and alsa-utils are installed), but when I enter
amixer sset Master unmute
it returns
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0
and trying
speaker-test -c 2
returns
...
ALSA lib pxm_dmix.c:100: (snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2, No such file or directory
I'm probably missing something simple but I have no idea what it could be.

All your "failed" attempts will by default try to access hw:0,0 which is a HDMI device in your case.
Try
speaker-test -c2 -Dhw:1
and unless you're dead tied to try to handle this with plain ALSA I'd strongly reccommend you install pipewire-alsa, pipewire-pulse and setup proper defaults via pavucontrol or so.

Before you install those pipewire packages, read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PipeWire .
If you want to stick to alsa , check https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Advanc … Card_index for info how to change the default card so hw:0,0 will become the sound output of the laptop.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

speaker-test -c2 -Dhw:1
resulted in another error, though I don't remember which.
Installing pipewire et al fixed everything though, and now both speaker-tests work so thank you.
