[Solved] Weird fontAwesome issue with "black circle".

For a while now I've been dealing with a very weird font issue in firefox, specifically how it renders the character meant to hide password characters.
Instead of it being a black dot, it is inexplicably a white circle with a black outline, and it takes up a considerably larger amount of space.
This has been bothering me for quite a while, as it appears not only in firefox but in other applications too, like hyprpolkitagent. I have no idea why my entire system has
fixated itself on this one font so much, nor do I know how to fix it.

Specifically, it is the "black circle" (U+25CF, ●) character that isn't being displayed properly.
The font firefox uses is "noto serif", I have noto-fonts, noto-fonts-cjk, noto-fonts-extra, and noto-fonts-emoji.

You made sure that it's that glyph (eg. when entering it here) and FF/gtk isn't just using eg. ◯ / U+25EF as password glyph?

What does that look like (should open a tiny window w/ the glyph) and what does it print?

What does that look like (should open a tiny window w/ the glyph) and what does it print?

I made sure that the glyph is the black circle, and just now got the confirmation that the black circle is, at the very least, being rendered as U+25EF, even outside of the noto sans serif font.

I've been configuring waybar, and when I tried setting the active workspace icon to the black circle, it showed up as U+25EF, even when I limited the font family to only FontAwesome.
Switching to jetbrains mono nerd font made it render correctly, but I have no idea why there are multiple fonts sharing this same issue.

The output of the previous command will show what font is actually used to resolve that glyph (when asking for "noto serif") - many fonts (assuming those families are present) don't have complete UTF-8 coverage and the glyphs are then substituted from other fonts.
It would seem there's some bogus font very high up in your substitution list.

That being said, 25CF isn't particular exotic and

fc-list :charset=25CF

shows it in A LOT of fonts here.

The output of the previous command will show what font is actually used to resolve that glyph (when asking for "noto serif") - many fonts (assuming those families are present) don't have complete UTF-8 coverage and the glyphs are then substituted from other fonts.
It would seem there's some bogus font very high up in your substitution list.

That being said, 25CF isn't particular exotic and

fc-list :charset=25CF

shows it in A LOT of fonts here.

But probably report this upstream.

I ended up just uninstalling fontawesome as it wasn't required by anything, fixed the issue. Will still be reporting to upstream.
