geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

geeqie (image viewer) was upgraded today from 2.5-2 to 2.6-1. The new version doesn't launch at all; invoking geeqie in a terminal shows no message, no sign of any problem. CTRL+C was needed to stop the waiting program.

Gnome 48.1 (Wayland)

Downgrading to geeqie 2.5-2 resolves the problem.

I did the same upgrade on 3 other PCs (2 laptops and one Lenovo PC) with similar results. They all run Arch Linux with Gnome 48.1 on Wayland.

On one of the laptop, geeqie's 2.6 icon was visible on topbar (Dash to Panel extension runs on all PCs) when Geeqie was launch from a terminal. Clicking the icon brings Geeqie 2.6 on the screen, it runs, but a little sluggish. I closed the app, closed the terminal, but trying to launch Geeqie from the Gnome Dash stays unresponsive.

Again, downgrading to Geeqie 2.5 was the only solution.

Re: geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

I'd first and foremost test whether the problem exists w/
- not gnome
- X11
- a fresh user account
(you can try to launch it from an openbox sessen w/ a fresh user account to cover all at once, then narrow on the critical factor if this actually works)

You're right, I should have try this before!

- not Gnome:
Test with Sway (Wayland), Geeqie 2.6 works but is very slow, almost unusable

- X11
Test on Gnome (X11) another user : Geeqie 2.6 works, almost as fast (if not as fast) as Geeqie 2.5 on Gnome Wayland

My test system:
Arch Linux, ASUS MB, 16G memory
DE: GNOME 48.1
WM: Mutter (Wayland)
Display (BenQ Corporation 27"): 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz (as 2560x1440) in 27"
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 570 Series [Discrete]

Geeqie settings indicate that GPU is used by default

Did you test gnome/wayland w/ the fresh user?

printenv # on both users

Re: geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

Well you're right, GDK_BACKEND=x11 geeqie works perfectly for me too on Gnome 48.1 Wayland.

So for me the bug is solved, but I'm surprised that Geeqie needs now to invoke Xwayland as it never was necessary before.

Re: geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

Didy the previous version use xwayland?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waylan … plications

The "fix" isn't all that surprising, the question is still what causes this - did you test gnome/wayland w/ the fresh user?

Removing (or renaming) ./local/geeqie has the same effect as new user, there is no difference in the behavior of Geeqie 2.6 despite the new .config directory.

For me it is partly solved.

Adding /usr/bin/env VAR=GDK_BACKEND=x11 to the exec line of org.geeqie.Geeqie.desktop makes Geeqie able to launch but, strangly in Gnome, it's window goes in the background, I have to click on the Geeqie icon in the top bar to bring Geeqie 2.6 in the foreground and give it the focus.

Once launched, Geeqie 2.6 works but doesn't show any thumbnails in the side bar, I have to press T twice to show the thumbnails (T is the shortcut for showing thumbnails).

I downgraded to Geeqie 2.5 and effectively it works using Xwayland as shows xlsclients -l

Window 0xa00001:
  Machine:  blablabla
  Name:  geeqie
  Icon Name:  geeqie
  Command:  geeqie
  Instance/Class:  geeqie/Geeqie

I use Geeqie for years, I'll stick for now to version 2.5 as I don't see any improvements using version 2.6.

Re: geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

I have the same issue as above. I also use wayland. In trying to solve the problem, I deleted the .config/geeqie file, and now when I try to start it from the terminal, I get the following error:

Error reading configuration file: ~/.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml - Failed to open file “~/.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml”: No such file or directory
Error reading configuration file: ~/.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml - Failed to open file “~/.config/geeqie/default_window_layout.xml”: No such file or directory

The above is modified to replace absolute path with relative path.

(The above "solution" with GDK_BACKEND=x11 works, and when you start it that way, it creates a geeqierc.xml file in ~/.config. But the problem remains without the GDK_BACKEND approach.)

I am on version 2.6-2 with build-date Wed 07 May 2025 05:40:32 AM CDT

Re: geeqie 2.6-1 launch with problems

I've to confirm this issue on Wayland. Geeqie also shows the error messages from bay2sian, when the configs are deleted.
And using `GDK_BACKEND=X11` caused a system crash for me while browsing through the images in fullscreen.
