Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

Sorry to be jumping in without doing a full read of all posts.

Here's the question:

As I ALWAYS run as root:
Are there any gottchas and/or is it simpler to get an RT system running due to not needing a regular user?

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

That is because you've started jack as root, and then afterwards tried to start it with a users which doesn't have privilegies to that file.
Should be as easy as removing it and re-run jack. Shouldn't be neccecary to run as root, at least not to get the correct privilegies.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

hai.

i've been mostly away busy with work and doing almost no audio; i've been wandering into other distros and seeing how the linux distros go; all fun, none come close to arch in friendlyness (oh well, pardus and gobo are nice, but still far off). now i'm back to arch and probably will have an x86_64 machine to make packages for.

my repository has been dead for a while, so if you don't need it anymore, i can take it offline. not sure i will be providing packages in arch format exactly.

kthxbai.

keep in touch.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

jack2 (1.9.x) otherwise known as jack mp (or similar) in AUR solved ALL issues. Uses a different method.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

Hello ladies

The repo is now ready (with base audio apps, see below) - http://archaudio.org/packages/

Included are upstream stable and devel versions of jack, lv2, and slv2, and of course an RT kernel (grncdr provided the x86_64 build, which is not the latest of course).

For jack*, you can start it at boot, as user, with RT privilleges wink Arch's jack is set to do it too: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15102

[archaudio-testing]
Server = http://repos.archaudio.org/testing/i686 #x86_64

Another thing left to do is clean up the documentation in the ArchWiki.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

I've tried, it doesn't apply cleanly. You could always compile your own .31 kernel, there's RT patches for that.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

Short answer: No

Long answer: Yes, manually. Go through the patch and the relevant files. Edit accordingly. A prerequisite is understanding a patch file, of course. I've done this a few times in the past and I can tell you that it's not rewarding smile

You have 2 choices then:

1) .29

2) .31-rc

And I suppose .31 will come out of RC soon, so you may want to just wait.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

.31 is already released and available in [testing].

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

hey guys, the rt kernel doesn't seem to work with radeonhd. The regular arch kernel works fine.
I have the latest rt kernel and tried but regular and git radeonhd drivers. both work with main kernel.

the system boots but freezes before the login screen.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

Yes I have a big hunch it's because of the GPL symbol hack included for catalyst. You could try commenting those out. Or if you use a binary from archaudio, file a bug.

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

Hey schiv, thanx but I am now using the open-source drivers and I needed to do this to the RT kernel:
Add "radeon.modeset=0" into the kernel append line in /boot/grub/menu.lst or the lilo configuration file.

I found it in the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Disable_KMS

All works now...

Thanx again man.

on a side note:

Hey, on a side note, remember the vst dev who wanted to port his apps to linux, he gave up man... this is his answer to me on facebook:

Well we have decided to stop pursuing linux for the time being. It just seems that everyone runs around like chickens with their heads cut off. Honestly I'm surprised that anything ever gets done in that world. There is always too many people doing too many things all under the same banner but all with different outcomes. So, if there is gong to be a linux port, it will be done exclusively by ABG developers..

However, TBH It is no longer a priority...I offered source code and direction to a lot of developers, none of which have ever seemed to take the port quite seriously, so, This has left a bitter taste, which obviously has lead to my decision..not to port unless its done by us.. I would expect a MAC port long before you see a Linux port however..
KM

All he wanted was for someone to help port his apps, not make it something else under linux but Lucio from jost had other plans..
so the way cool apps will not be native linux for sometime unless we find someone from the linux scene to join AcmeBarGig to help the porting..

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

True, the promising party here didn't seem to be as active as we'd expected (jucetice). But also I think this is the way Linux development rolls, and so there's quite a misunderstanding between the open-source (let's not call it free) and proprietary development worlds. It appears to them as if "everyone runs around like chickens with their heads cut off" - but that's the norm for us =p

Re: ProAudio repository for Arch users

hey guys, are the archaudio repos gone? I read at the site that back at the end of November, some maintenance would be taking place on the Sunday 29th and all would be back up on the Monday.

yes it was delayed, but now it's up smile if you're still not able to access then dns propagation hasn't reached your area.
