No sound from Behringer U-Phoria UMC404HD after recent system update

My Behringer UMC404HD was working perfectly until this weekend.

I’ve been recording MIDI synths and guitars into Ardour using all four audio inputs on the front of the device, and both recording and playback has been perfect—until an update this weekend (10–11 May 2025).

Now I cannot get any computer-generated sound from it.

The outputs are named AUX0, AUX1, AUX2 and AUX3. When I play a song with mpv, I can see in helvum that a connection is made from output_FL and output_FR to playback_AUX0 and playback_AUX1 respectively on the “UMC404HD 192k Pro” device, but no output can be heard.

Likewise, Ardour creates lots of connections but no output can be heard on playback.

For info, the UMC404HD is a USB device, and mine is powered solely via USB.

The arch install is several years old, but bang up to date.

The device worked fine with my Windows 10 laptop, which I tested by simply taking the USB cable from the back of the PC and plugging it into the laptop, then playing an MP3 with VLC.

As expected, incoming audio (via the front inputs) can be heard as the device can work as a rudimentary audio mixer without being connected to a computer.

For years I’ve been using PipeWire with the Pro Audio profile (selected in pavucontrol), using a standard install with no weird configurations, and nothing appears to be muted. I’ve tried downgrading the kernel from v6.14.6 to v6.14.4, and PipeWire (and related packages) from v1.4.2 to v1.4.1, all with no success.

Some more info:

$ uname -a

where “payroll” is the name of the computer.

Alsamixer provides controls under the “(default)” sound card for Master Front and Master Rear for playback, and Capture Front and Capture Rear for capture. None are muted.

However,

$ alsamixer --card=U192k
cannot load mixer controls: No such file or directory

Can anyone help? What further info should I provide? Can I avoid going back to pulseaudio?
