Hey everyone,
I recently installed Arch Linux (rolling release) and have been facing a very frustrating issue that I can't seem to solve. I have an NVIDIA 5070 Ti, and I've tried using both the nvidia-open-beta and nvidia-open drivers, but the problem persists.
Problem Description:
Whenever I set a high-resolution wallpaper (like 4K or higher), my secondary monitor starts flickering at random intervals. I've also noticed that if I use extremely high-resolution wallpapers (like 10K x 10K from Dezoomify or Google Arts), my primary monitor also starts flickering. The flicker usually affects the lower part of the screen, roughly the lower 1/4th of the display.
System Information:
- Operating System: Arch Linux (Rolling Release)
- Kernel Version: 6.14.6-arch1-1
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA 5070 Ti
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3d
- Driver: Tried both nvidia-open-beta and nvidia-open drivers
- Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland)
- Other Desktop Environments Tested: LXQt, XFCE (Same Issue)
- Monitor Setup: 2x 4K 144Hz monitors, both connected via DisplayPort
Things I Have Tried:
- Switched between nvidia-open-beta and nvidia-open drivers.
- Tested with different desktop environments (KDE, LXQt, XFCE) – same result.
- Disabled VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) on both monitors and in KDE settings.
- Changed DisplayPort cables – no change.
- I used Wayland because on X11, my secondary monitor didn’t feel like it was running at 144Hz when rotating it (since it's vertically positioned), using no rotation did not cause issues wierdly.
Additional Details:
- The flickering is more consistent on the secondary monitor, but with very high-resolution wallpapers, the primary monitor also starts flickering slightly.
- The flickering only occurs with high-resolution wallpapers (like 4K or higher). If I use a standard wallpaper, the issue disappears.
- I have not seen anyone with the exact same problem and I’m out of ideas at this point.
Video of the Issue: Video link
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
I'd appreciate any help or guidance. This issue is really driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General but the only way this makes even remotely sense is if /all/ the tested environments (notably desktop shells) are written by functional retards and rescale the wallpaper on every update - what seems unlikely.
Do you also get this in image viewers?
I know for a fact that https://github.com/luebking/phototonic was written by a functional retard and repaints the image on every update scaled (hardware accelerated) - does viewing large images there also make any outputs flicker? (10k² will get downscaled for display because it exceeds the default Qt texure limit)
Edit: that's btw. neither the repo nor the AUR package, they're the packaging the unmaintained fork base - do not try to open hugely images with that, notably not with X11!

Hey seth,
Thanks for the response.
I checked as you suggested, and I have some updates.

3. Testing with Phototonic:
I installed Phototonic and tested opening high-resolution images (like 10K x 10K). While the application itself lagged due to the size of the images, there was no flickering on any of the monitors. This seems to suggest that the issue is directly related to how wallpapers are being set/displayed in the desktop environment rather than a general problem with high-resolution image handling.
4. Other Tests and Observations:
- I also tested using Labwc (Wayland Window Compositor), and the problem still occurred.
- When I set one of the monitors to 60Hz instead of 144Hz, the flickering disappeared.
- I tested using HDMI 2.1 cables instead of DisplayPort, but the problem persisted.
Would you have any further suggestions on how I could debug this issue?
Thanks again for your help I highly appreciate it.

Hey Seth, some updates:
- I already had `nvidia-drm.modeset=1` enabled, but I added `nvidia-drm.fbdev=1` to ensure framebuffer support was active.
- Configured Dracut to force early loading of NVIDIA drivers:
sudo nano /etc/dracut.conf.d/nvidia.conf
force_drivers+=" nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm "
add_drivers+=" nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm "
omit_drivers+=" nouveau "
install_items+="/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf"
Created a modprobe config for NVIDIA:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
options nvidia_drm modeset=1
And then regenerated initramfs using Dracut:
sudo dracut-rebuild
And lastly I put my wallpapers in the /usr/share backgrounds folder.
So far, I haven't been able to reproduce the flickering. I will continue to monitor it.

Hey Seth, I have a last update.
I think I have isolated the reason as to why it flickers.
In KDE Plasmas display configuration, when setting Adaptive Sync from Automatic to Always, I no longer get flickers or atleast I havent been able to reproduce it for like an hour.
When they are both set to Automatic, it will occasionally flicker but at insanely random intervals. I have no idea why this is.

ftr, this is phototonic 3.0, not 2.1 (from the repos)? The latter will be slow on this for various reasons but more importantly is unsuitable for this test.
I added `nvidia-drm.fbdev=1` to ensure framebuffer support was active
This is supposed to be enabled by default anyway?
And unlike the "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" has no double-function (killing the simpleton device)
More ftr:
According to your xorg log you were running the server on the nvidia GPU at the time (this is a hybrid graphics system)
The only output was connect to the nvidia GPU as well, is the other monitor connected to the amd GPU? And is running on the nvidia GPU deliberate?
Online
Hey seth,
I made sure to disable the iGPU in bios.
But I have found a fix. Which is to simply disable Adaptive Sync on both my monitors.
The flickering would occur when Adaptive Sync was set to "Automatic" in KDE settings.
When changing to "Always" I would not get the flickering, but I would feel some kind of intermittent "lag" when moving my mouse around, like the cursor would lag a bit, and some other apps as well when moving them around.
I simply disabled Adaptive Sync on both monitors and everything seems, so far, to be working perfectly smooth. No issues at all.
Thanks for your help Seth!

Yes, it's apparently a kwin bug, though (see the other thread)
