Hello
I have a HP multi-function scanner printer HP Color Laser MFP 179fwg connected via USB.
Despite being a HP, it is actually more a Samsung model working with the specific HPULD AUR package.
(cf wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS/P … oblems#HP)
Before, with this package and after adding smfp in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf, it was possible to scan when connected via USB (using simple-scan).
I don't know when it stopped working because I don't scan so often.
Now it seems to be undetected again.
% sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
# Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
# If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".

# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.
# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
# You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
# found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
# necessary.
% scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
% grep smfp /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
smfp
simple-scan says a firmware need to be installed.
I am only finding old posts about this subject (mainly missing HPULD or smfp in dll.conf), but nothing about a new issue this year.

Ok I don't know if it's a workaround or a solution but it seems tuning the xerox_mfp.conf does the trick.
% tail -n 3 /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf
# "HP" Samsung
usb 0x03f0 0xeb2a
Adapt yours ids with the ones you find with lsusb or sane-find-scanner.
Packages hplip and sane-airscan do not help for anything for this specific printer/scanner because it is a Xerox Samsung HP one !
