Hi people,
I want to raise a point about the consolefont. Incidentally, there is an older thread related to this issue, that was just closed yesterday. But the discussion went over my newbie head and it did not answer the questions I have.
The main point is that I get hit with a "WARNING: consolefont: no font found in configuration" (logs below) although I did follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide to the point. But even after researching the cause and effect of this I could not reach a satisfying conclusion.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=283051
Suggests that /etc/vconsole.conf and /etc/locale.conf should be present and correct.
Suggests to remove the consolefont-hook from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=281468
Suggests to add a font to /etc/vconsole.conf.
Suggests to remove the consolefont-hook from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=284365
Suggest to only add FONT=ter-120n to /etc/vconsole.conf
None of the suggestions above solves the problem and removes the warning for me.
Below you find the commands I executed, including the complete output after running pacstrap. After the first attempt, I started modifications based on the threads above. After working in every suggestion, I re-ran "pacstrap -K /mnt base linux linux-firmware" and the warning "WARNING: consolefont: no font found in configuration" was always printed to the console. After implementing the last suggestion, I am now left with this configuration:
root@archiso ~ # cat /etc/vconsole.conf
#FONT=eurlatgr
FONT=ter-120n
KEYMAP=de-latin1
root@archiso ~ # cat /etc/locale.conf
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
root@archiso ~ # cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf | grep -ve "^#"
MODULES=()
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect microcode modconf kms keyboard keymap block filesystems fsck)
root@archiso ~ #
The attempt is based on archlinux-2025.05.01-x86_64.iso
Finally, this is the output of my first attempt, where I followed the installation guide:
root@archiso ~ # loadkeys de-latin1
root@archiso ~ # setfont eurlatgr
root@archiso ~ # timedatectl set-timezone Europe/Berlin
root@archiso ~ # gdisk /dev/sda
root@archiso ~ # mkfs.fat -F 32 /dev/sda1
root@archiso ~ # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
root@archiso ~ # mkswap /dev/sda3
root@archiso ~ # mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
root@archiso ~ # mount --mkdir /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
root@archiso ~ # swapon /dev/sda3
root@archiso ~ # pacstrap -K /mnt base linux linux-firmware

None of the suggestions above solves the problem and removes the warning for me.
It's not really a problem. Are you experiencing any adverse issues?
Offline
I understand the intention behind saying "it's not really a problem," but I think that misses the point.
The warning explicitly says:
> WARNING: consolefont: no font found in configuration
That suggests there’s either a misconfiguration or an unmet expectation in the system setup. I did configure a font:
# /etc/vconsole.conf
FONT=ter-120n
KEYMAP=de-latin1
Something about how console fonts are handled has changed and the documentation is out of date,
The warning is misleading or buggy,
Or something in the installation process (like pacstrap or mkinitcpio) isn't respecting the config.
Also, if Arch provides an Installation guide that’s intended to help new users, and following it still results in unexplained warnings — even if harmless — that is a problem. Warnings imply something's wrong, and for someone learning the system, they create uncertainty: Did I miss something? Is this going to bite me later?
Saying “it's not a problem” without explaining why the warning appears or what it actually means doesn’t help clarify that. If there’s a known reason why this happens despite the configuration being set, I’d really appreciate a more technical explanation in the installation guide.

Are you editing vconsole.conf and mkinitcpio.conf on the iso or in the chroot?
Your post looks like you at best edited the config of the archiso (which is a transient overlay and gone w/ the next boot of that image)

That suggests there’s either a misconfiguration or an unmet expectation in the system setup. I did configure a font:
Because it *is* a misconfiguration. It also happens to be the default condition, so it will always be there with pacstrap. If you want to fix it, you fix it later, editing the configs on the install image is, of course, useless.

I get that editing configs on the live ISO doesn’t persist—fair enough. But let’s be real: the installation guide is either incorrect or omits critical steps entirely. So if someone follows it exactly and ends up misconfiguring things, the blame isn’t on them. Pointing that out doesn’t require being dismissive.
And saying “just fix it later” isn’t helpful when the whole point of the guide is to walk newcomers through the process. If something has to be fixed later, the guide should explain that—not assume people already know. It’s frustrating to raise legitimate concerns about a newbie guide and get responses that feel more like gatekeeping than actual help.
Shouldn’t we be working together to fix the guide? I’ve already provided quite a bit of info from the perspective of someone going through it step by step. Someone with deeper knowledge could take that and improve the guide so this confusion doesn’t keep happening. And I am willing to test any solutions that are brought up and provide feedback on them from the perspective of a newbie. The fact that it is a recurring issue should be reason enough to improve it.

This is not a recurring issue. It's a warning, and completely expected with pacstrap as I already said. If you want to fix it, go ahead, but this isn't something that's important to installing Arch.

So if you didn't edit the config in the chroot but on the iso, you have not, in fact, been following the guide exactly?

Yes, I have been following the guide. The issue arises at step 2.2 (Install essential packages). The chroot step doesn’t come until 3.2, so at the point where the warning appears, you're still on the ISO.

If this behavior is expected, that's fine—but then the guide should explain the behaviour, so newbie's can learn from it and follow up on it. Saying it's “not important” doesn't change the fact that it's confusing to people trying to do a clean install by the book. I’m already contributing as much as I can by flagging these unclear areas. If you’re not interested in improving that part, that’s totally your choice—but in that case, I don’t quite understand the point of continuing to downplay the issue. No offense meant.

The pacstrap is not an issue.
It will yell several warning at you (did you not notice all the stuff about "not doing this because operating in a chroot?)
The bootstrap is part of, but not the installation process - and it's inherently ugly to overcome the hen and egg problem (spoiler: the hen and the egg fucked) why installers hide it behind a meaningless progress bar, but if you don't want to see how the sausage is made, why are you installing archlinux?
The only legitimate issue you're claiming in your OP is that you edited vconsole.conf a d makepkg.conf and that had no impact, but for all we can say that's because you edited the files on the install iso which isn't anywhere in the installation guide.
A warning is exactly that, a warning.
It says "HEY! IDIOT! YES, YOU! LOOK OVER HERE! IS THIS OK?" and meant for you to look there and pay attention, understand what's going on and estimate the situation.
Eg. the "WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module" you somehow didn't address will stay there, even after the installation process unless you install the firmware for some hardware that was popular when you were born.
And likewise will the consolefont hook until you decide whether you want to remove the hook or add a font configuration. What you attempted to do but failed because you operated on the wrong system and out of line with the installation guide. What I'm pretty sure is the cause of of your confusion and this thread. Since you didn't address any of the other warnings.
A warning is especially not an "error" - which says"AHHHHHHH!!!!" to indicate an undeniable problem because something went wrong.
the guide should explain the behaviour
And what would you suggest the wiki should say about this?
"The installation might show some scary messages, so best redirect the output of these commands into /dev/null and look out of the window. Maybe you can spot some hen fucking an egg."?
You're supposed to read and understand what the system is telling you. Always. Training people into bad habits "just click away this dialog" is hardly a good idea.

This reply is straight-up condescending. You’re flexing knowledge and mocking someone for asking valid questions after following the guide step by step. The “hen fucking an egg” line and the all-caps “HEY! IDIOT!” nonsense are just bad-faith ridicule meant to shut down discussion, not help anyone.
I’m not interested in continuing a conversation with someone more focused on asserting superiority than actually improving anything. For someone that clearly has no interest in giving help, you're very involved in this discussion. Stop acting like wanting clarity somehow disqualifies people from using Arch. That kind of gatekeeping is exactly what drives people away from this community. Unless that's exactly your goal, in which case, yeah, you win. I hope that made your day.
I’m done here.
The reason for the warning is that consolefont is a default hook for mkinitcpio and requires /etc/vconsole.conf to exist with valid content.
When the initial pacstrap is run, that file doesn't exist.
A note in 'configure the system' to look at/customize the mkinitcpio hooks might be an improvement of the installation guide .

I'm not shutting down anything but apparently it was necessary to stress what a warning is and implies. And I'm doing that in good faith, but also a really loose fashion. This thread being no exception at all.
The bottom line is that you saw that warning, tried to address it, operated on the wrong context, then came here to complain that all this doesn't work and there's certainly a mistake in the wiki and when confronted w/ the simple explanation that you acted haphazardly and edited the wrong files, started to deflect (the wiki is wrong => the wiki is confusing), moved the goal post (how to get rid of the warning => we should improve the wiki) and are now taking your ball to go play home, willfullingly misinterpreting some indirect jokes as personal attacks for an easy off-ramp.
Fine.
I'm not discussing any of this but if you're acting in good faith and felt there's some confusing stuff, it might help to explain to the unconfused why only the consolefont warnings are causing that confusion and maybe address
what would you suggest the wiki should say about this?
Keep in mind: it is a bunch of generic warnings that there're unaddressed conditions because
1. the chroot context
2. the early stage of a so far unconfigured system
3. because nobody has that hardware anymore
4. tba (new hooks to come)
5. in specific cases there might be other warnings that hint at actual problems with the step

You were given the clarity. It was you who refused and then doubled down. Your latest response is not in good faith. You are accusing Seth of doing what you are doing, responding not in good faith.
