This is working for me:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 30.0 - 93.5
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0
ModeLine "1400x1050@85i" 83.5 1400 1432 1744 1776 1050 1072 1080 1103 interlace
ModeLine "1400x1050@85" 179.3 1400 1504 1656 1912 1050 1051 1054 1103 -hsync +vsync
Option "DPMS"
#modeline generated by http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "ScreenFglrx"
Device "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050@85"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Unfortunately this stopped working with fglrx version 8.30.3, from that version on it seems you can't use modelines anymore.
More info here
I switched to the opensource R300 drivers to be able to keep using 1400*1050, so I don't know if ati fixed the issue in the latest driver, let me know if they have ;-)

I'll just say try it, It may already work again with the latest drivers. I didn't try the latest versions.
If your Xorg freezes with a black screen while starting, the problem is still there. But for the moment I see you already have modelines in your xorg.conf file, can you start xorg with that file? If so it seems modelines are working again.
