Wine stuttering

I haven't seen this posted anywhere else, so assume it's something here, though I'm blowed if I know what.

wine 10.8.2 and 10.9.1 stutter badly, even in light games. No such problem with 10.8.1, where I can push SoTR to ultra and see get > 100FPS buttery smooth with no issues.

My H/W config is in my signature. Using NVidia proprietary drivers, X11 desktop (not Wayland)

I can't think where to look to solve the problem. Any ideas?

Re: Wine stuttering

10.8-2 enabled WoW64 and the news item mentions that performance might be degraded. (Although the news makes it sound like it’s a minor issue?)

I’m seeing the same. Tomb Raider 2 from 1997 is unplayable at about 1-2 FPS on 10.9 but works fine on 10.8-1 (and earlier). Intel HD4000 on an i7-3770 here, X.Org.

I didn’t have a chance yet to dig deeper into this.

Re: Wine stuttering

I'm no expert on this, but here's what I found:

Do you also see this message in the console output?

0128:fixme:opengl:wow64_map_buffer Doing a copy of a mapped buffer (expect performance issues)

If so, this appears to be the upstream bug that tracks it: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55981 (... if I understand https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/c … 7a17e84100 and https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55045 correctly).

There's also an open merge request in Wine that tries to alleviate the problem: https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/m … uests/5145

(Personally, I'll stick to 10.8-1 for now. Once that inevitably breaks, wine-stable from the AUR might be an option.)

Re: Wine stuttering

I did wonder if it was something connected to WoW64, but for now I've pinned at 10.8-1.

Re: Wine stuttering

Just a quick update on this, no improvement on any wine versions since 10.8-1, and no progress on the bug report. However, it was only happening with one locally installed game that I added to my Steam library. Installed dxvk and it fixed it running directly with wine, but not when running from Steam. I've gotten around that by removing it from my steam library as a direct link to the game, and instead pointing the steam entry to a tiny bash script which launches it with wine (no real benefit to this except the convenience), and it works just fine. Tested other steam games and there's no noticeable change to them.
