Still getting squares in apps after installing Asian fonts

Hi all,

After I installed Asian font packages (ttf-uming, ttf-ukai, flysung), I'm able to view web pages correctly.  However, the applications are still displaying in squares where the symbols are.  Any ideas how to solve this problem?

TIA.

Just a guess, but is the character encoding set correctly in the browser? Also, you may want to check your locale settings.

I've no problem in viewing web pages.  It's in the application that I got these squares.  (Namely Kopete friend nicknames)

I changed all fonts from Vera to Dejavu, but the problem persists.

Re: Still getting squares in apps after installing Asian fonts

The problem is not solved by using DejaVu.

You should change the encoding to utf8 and set Arphic/Kochi as substitute for your used fonts. The steps to achieve this are illustrated in the above linked thread.

Sorry for the delay in reply - I've been busy these two days.

Anyway, the encoding is default to en_US.UTF-8, isn't it?  (Assume by encoding you mean LOCALE=... in /etc/rc.conf).  It still doesn't work for me.  (again, I'm able to view the web pages, but not the characters in applications)

However, if I change my LOCALE to zh_CN.UTF-8, then it shows correctly, but then even the bash messages are shown in Chinese characters...I prefer the characters are shown where they should be but not localizing to the point where it translates even the error message for me.

You have to change the encoding of Konqueror itself to utf8, when using it. All the other necessities have been already done I assume.

I have in Konqueror settings "Use Language Encodings" and it works for me.
