Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

I'm having an issue with my ThinkPad E14 Gen 5: the display completely cuts out, and there is no signal over HDMI either. The issue seems to happen randomly, sometimes when I am using YouTube or Discord.

System info:
Kernel: 6.15.3-arch1-1
WM: Hyprland (uwsm managed)
GPU: VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Barcelo (rev c5)

At seemingly random times, the display shuts off completely (no backlight or signal). The fans spinning up. I have to do a hard reboot with the power button. I have tried updating all my packages. From journalctl I found some lines relating to the GPU:

Could this be a kernel issue or a hardware issue? Are there any other logs I should post?

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

I appears so, playing a sample video with mpv --hwdec=auto also triggers the issue, it plays fine for a couple of seconds, then mpv stops responding and then it appears to crash. I notice that my CPU temp reaches about 80 degrees before it crashes, this is true for Firefox and Epiphany too.

UPDATE:
I tried to force the issue by running mpv --hwdec=auto again. Here's the journal,

$ journalctl -b -1 -k

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Likewise limited to the HWA? But running some heavy duty GL client (other user tested some unigine demo) doesn't knock out the GPU?
Likewise affects different SW stacks (other user tested mpv on Pop!OS, but any sort of live distro would do) - resp. is the LTS kernel affected?

Interestingly the issue seems limited to using the machine with an external monitor (Dell U2723QE, Thunderbolt) while HWA is enabled. After disconnecting from the monitor, I was able to view videos with HWA in Firefox/mpv and run the Unigine Superposition demo without issues. Once connected to the monitor, I experience GPU crashes when HWA is enabled. The GPU crashes when viewing videos with Firefox/mpv and when running the Unigine demo. I was able to reproduce the issue on GNOME, and different Live ISOs (Linux Mint and Debian). The issue remains after switching to the LTS kernel.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

It's not a hybrid system, so the external display doesn't invoke another GPU or so - does the external output have a much larger resolution?
Does it help to roll back linux-firmware to 20250508.788aadc8-2 ?
There's been quite some fuss about amdgpu firmware specifically in the entire 20250613 batch…

The built in display is 2240x1400 and the monitor is 3840x2160.  I tried rolling back to linux-firmware 20250508.788aadc8-2, but it made no difference.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Can you run the external output at a (much) lower resolution (eg FullHD)?

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

I added this line in my hyprland.conf:

monitor = eDP-1, 1920x1200, 1920x0, 1
monitor = DP-1, 1920x1080, 0x0, 1

Still experiencing crashes.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Does it also crash if you're using the external monitor *instead* of the internal one?

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Can you prevent this by forcing the GPU into performance mode or a higher power profile, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … nce_levels ?

Assuming 'card1' is the correct target,

$ ls /sys/class/drm/
card1  card1-DP-1  card1-DP-2  card1-eDP-1  card1-HDMI-A-1  renderD128  version

I tried forcing it into the 'high' performance level,

$ echo "high" | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
high

I tried switching to the 'COMPUTE' power profile,

$ cat /sys/class/drm/card1/device/pp_power_profile_mode
 1 3D_FULL_SCREEN
 3          VIDEO
 4             VR
 5        COMPUTE
 6         CUSTOM
$ echo "manual" | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
manual
$ echo "5" | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
5

Sadly none of these worked. I also tried forcing it into the "low" performance level. It crashed the same way on all performance levels/profiles.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Meh.
Anything special about the monitor? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Variable_refresh_rate ?

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/v4l-utils/

I doesn't support VRR. Other than that, nothing special comes to mind.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Use mpv for testing, browser video acceleration has too many variables.

Do you have another monitor?

Bits per primary color channel: 10

looks interesting.

Can you get it to crash on X11 (eg. openbox+xterm will  do)?

Sadly no.

I don't know if this is useful, but when the monitor turns on it displays a banner with '3840x2160 60Hz 30-bit'

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

[Update]
Running mpv works under Wayland now, I don't know why, it always crashed earlier. Still experiencing crashes when connected to the monitor and running video acceleration in browsers. It does not crash when running video acceleration in browsers while connected to a TV over HDMI.

Cause you've 3 color channels - can you set the monitor to 8bpc? (Idk how do do this w/ random wayland compositors - iff at all possible. We could however configure X11 to run on 10bpc and see whether it starts to crash there)

Running mpv works under Wayland now, I don't know why

Is this after previously running an X11 session and w/o reboot? Does rebooting straight into wayland then re-introduce the crashes?

It was after a reboot, and it doesn't crash on Wayland now.

seth wrote:

Not with mpv.

seth wrote:

It doesn't seem like there's an option for settig 8bpc on the monitor itself, but I found this on the Hyprland wiki, https://wiki.hypr.land/Configuring/Moni … it-support.
I tried setting it to 8bpc,

monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 8

and 10bpc,

monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 10

I also tried to change the default sRGB output preset,

monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 10, cm, wide

and for 8bpc,

monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 8, cm, auto

None of these worked. Just to clarify, mpv works fine now, I am still experiencing crashes when viewing videos in browsers with HWA enabled. It seems like it lasts longer before it crashes, and the CPU/GPU temp doesn't ramp up to 70°C like it used to, maybe because of the latest updates to firmware and amd ucode? Interestingly, when setting my monitor input color format to YCbCr, it takes much longer before it crashes, about 15 minutes. There's also options for sRGB, Rec.709, and DCI-P3 color.

We could however configure X11 to run on 10bpc and see whether it starts to crash there.

Could certainly try it out.

[UPDATE]
I still get temperatures between 70-80°C when watching random videos on YouTube, in Firefox, with and without VAAPI enabled. I'm at a loss. This is when running in 8bpc; in hyprland.conf:

# built-in
monitor = eDP-1, preferred, 1920x0, 1, bitdepth, 8, cm, auto, vrr, 0

# external
monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1.5, bitdepth, 8, cm, auto, vrr, 0

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Did you update https://archlinux.org/packages/core/any … re-amdgpu/ before the mpv crashes stopped?
Does the browser test still trigger

?

It does not crash when running video acceleration in browsers while connected to a TV over HDMI.

when setting my monitor input color format to YCbCr, it takes much longer before it crashes, about 15 minutes

Did you test the Tv > 15 minutes?

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Update: No issues when testing video playback over HDMI to the TV and monitor, left on for about 1 hour (Youtube video, Firefox with VAAPI enabled). I recently found that it will eventually crash on HDMI too.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

Temporary solution:
I found a similar issue on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/12528, and have been able to find a temporary solution with 'mesa-git', settings in Firefox 'about:config',

media.hardware-video-decoding.enabled false
media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled false
media.ffmpeg.vaapi.force-surface-zero-copy 0

and in 'hyprland.conf',

# built-in
monitor = eDP-1, preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 8, cm, auto, vrr, 0

#external
monitor = , preferred, 0x0, 1, bitdepth, 8, cm, auto, vrr, 0

I left it on for several hours playing videos. I'm still getting very high temps, ranging from 70-80°C, but at least it hasn't crashed yet.

Re: Sudden loss of display output - ThinkPad amdgpu

But that involves simply disabling HW acceleration for FF - do you actually have to do any of the other steps?

Fwwi and in case that's the primary objective: I haven't watched youtube videos in a browser in a LOOOOOOONG time (mostly because the acceleration sucks but also because the yt webpage is annoying and will respond to adblockers by leaking RAM…)
