When I'm playing something via proton, I sometime notice how pipewire/wireplpumber seem to hang: Nothing on my laptop (dell XPS 9320, i7-1260P) is able to play any sound anymore and the paplay processes I use to play a click when I change the volume accumulate (instead of just playing the sound and disappearing).
This can usually be temporarily adressed by changing the Profile of the "Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio Controller" from "Play HiFi quality Music" to "Professional Audio" and back to PHFQM in Pavucontrol's "Configuration" tab. After a couple of seconds of doing this, the sounds comes back, but usually goes away again after a couple of minutes.
Some of the games I encountered this issue on are Geometry Dash, Hollow Knight (via proton), GTA V and Deltarune.
Also I had this issue both before and after reinsalling Arch on this laptop a couple of months ago, meaning on both installations, so it's not related to any settings I may have manually changed.
If I close a game while the audio is broken, I usually hear a continuous annoying cracking noise, until I do the profile change in pavucontrol.
This is not at all a new issue, I've been noticing it since 2023.
Notably, this seems to be releated to my laptop's internal speakers. Everything works fine if I just use bluetooth headphones (Galaxy Buds Pros).
Also this is not wine-specific as the same thing happens when I use plain wine too

Made an account to say I have this same (or very similar) issue. I'm on a Lenovo Thinkpad P16v gen 2, and had the same issue on another Lenovo Yoga with Fedora 42. Both also had Intel audio controllers. This Thinkpad's one specifically is listed as "Meteor-Lake-P HD Audio Controller". Switching the profile in pavucontrol for me also fixes it temporarily, but it usually breaks again.
I specifically seem to get the issue if focus on the application is lost and then regained, or if I get a Steam notification. In Deltarune it happens after selecting a chapter (Deltarune uses some GameMaker feature to launch a separate window when this happens). However, for me the audio is only broken for the application in proton, other audio is still intact.
I can see errors in pw-top when launching a proton game, not for the application but rather the output device/driver. I'm guessing this is an issue with the drivers for these audio controllers.
