[SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

I have read through many people sharing the same issue but couldn't really get to a solution... This is my first post in the forum so forgive me for formatting problems or anything, just let me know.

The problem, for what i have been able to understand, is that the module for my network drivers isn't being loaded, for some reason. I do not understand 100% how all drivers work, but i'll try to be as informative as i can on the issue.
I got to understand that the module that is causing issues is e1000e.

$ lspci .nn | grep Ethernet
00:1f.6 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (17) I219-V [8086:1a1d] (rev 11)

ip link and nmcli d do not show my network card.

$ dmesg | grep e1000e shows this:
[ 2.045499] e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
[ 2.045501] e1000e: Copyright(c) 1999 - 2015 Intel Corporation.
[    2.045858] e1000e 0000:00:1f.6: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 2.046057] e1000e 0000:00:1f.6: Interrupt Throttling Rate (ints/sec) set to dynamic conservative mode
[ 2.287029] e1000e 0000:00:1f.6: The NVM Checksum Is Not Valid
[ 2.318779] e1000e 0000:00:1f.6: probe with driver e1000e failed with error -5

I have tried using Intel's BootUtil tool to flash the card manually, this is what happens:

Error: Connection to QV driver failed - please reinstall it!

Intel(R) Ethernet Flash Firmware Utility
BootUtil version 1.43.08.0
Copyright (C) 2003-2025 Intel Corporation

Type BootUtil -? for help

Port Network Address Location Series WOL Flash Firmware Version
==== ============ ============== ======= === ========================== =======
   1 D8BBC1DD0CBA 00000:000:31.6 Gigabit N/A FLASH Not Present

My network card's leds are still turned on although it is not usable.
I am dual booting with windows and that is actually my biggest suspect. The card works on windows and i previously had installed wake on lan, for which i had to keep the card basically always busy receiving packets. I disabled all the settings from windows device manager and even updated the bios (which reset the settings).

The NVM Checksum Is Not Valid

I am dual booting with windows and that is actually my biggest suspect.

Rightfully so: 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Basically the only alternative is that you lack https://archlinux.org/packages/core/any … are-intel/

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Hi seth,
thank you for the quick reply. You know, I've seen your name quite often while looking at other people experiencing this issue lol, so I appreciate a lot your help.

I've tried disabling fastboot, i am pretty sure it's disabled
JCuCXdN.png

I even tried reinstalling the linux-firmware package and rebooting a few times, still nothing.
Something else i tried was disabling and uninstalling the drivers from windows > reboot to arch, still no progress > reboot to windows, internet back on.

I'm really trying to understand what could be the issue here, i tried also updating drivers for the network card on windows.

But did you specifically install the linux-firmware-intel as Seth suggested?

Cheers,

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Yes, since it was already installed I had to uninstall the whole linux-firmware package, and then reinstalled all of them.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Do you still end up w/ "The NVM Checksum Is Not Valid"?
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

0x0.st works here, too - no need to copy around the internet tongue

Add "e1000e.debug=16" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters - did you at any point boot w/ e1000e.WriteProtectNVM disabled? (do NOT just do  that!)

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Hi seth, thank you for trying to help me.

I tried adding that line as a parameter to grub but it didn't resolve the issue. Just in case i remade the journalctl at https://0x0.st/80Vg.txt

This is my grub configuration, sorry for the bad quality:
TrsP2hC.png

To be honest yesterday night i tried going through this solution, which i think could be it, but when i tried to recompile e1000e i would just get some errors from the source code.

Maybe if i use an older version of the code it might compile and let me apply the patch to avoid the nvc checksum?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

It's not supposed to fix anything, but I hoped to get some debug data from the module and more insight about what's wrong, but nada.

You could test the LTS kernel, but the invalid checksum will rather not go away.
Do you get this when booting some live distro (including the arch install iso)?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Yeah i remember i had no network during installation, so i assume it's not going to fix on a fresh install.

Sorry i forgot to link the solution i was talking about in my last post:

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

No, and I don't have high hopes for the LTS kernel either (you can still test that, no re-installation required, if you meant that)
This yells that windows is still controlling the NIC and that the driver there has altered its state.
Can you mount the windows ntfs partition from linux w/o getting an error about the FS still being opened?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Yeah i mounted the windows partition already with no issues, even copied files from it, although it was read only.
Sorry i forgot to write a link in my previous posts, i edited it.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Have you already tried https://superuser.com/questions/1104537 … 20#1188020 ?
Writing the NVM can completely brick your NIC, so be very careful w/ that.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Network on a fresh install.

Hey Seth, i'm not really sure what happened.
I already saw that post and tried it, i think i followed what he said too and enabled only ipv4 but it didnt work.
This time i went back and disabled Network Stack, saved, and now the NIC finally works.

To be honest i did some other things (like the NVM update tool, although i got an error from it) so i'm not 100% sure if it is that but i'm quite confident it was.
I tried going back to the bios and re enabling it and the card works again so i guess all that happened was a refresh in the NVM.

I think all i had to do was play a bit with the Network stack option, enabling, disabling etc to trigger something.
Thank you for the help, let me know i should add more details or if i should post something.

Not unless the situation changes.
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

nb. that I'm willing to bet your right arm that the situation was initially caused by windows fast start or any other condition that lead to booting a system while another one was in hibernation.
Windows has a habit of re-activating the feature w/ updates, so keep an eye on that.
