[HARDWARE DEFECT] Nvidia driver crashing

I have a laptop with an Nvidia RTX 5080 GPU, but the driver seems to be either crashing or failing to load, so the GPU is not available and not showing in Nvidia Settings.

Driver is nvidia-open-dkms 575.64.03

Unfortunately that's a blackwell chip, so you're locked w/ nvidia-open and the GSP, have you tried the main kernel (not LTS)

Also

Is there a parallel windows installation?
=> 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

And

intel_iommu=on iommu=pt vfio_pci vfio

Why? You're apparently not even moving any devices there - don't enforce the iommu.

Ftr, there're more problems and the system boots kinda slow

Re: [HARDWARE DEFECT] Nvidia driver crashing

There is no parallel Windows installation. In addition to the EFI partition and the home partition, the other partitions are old Linux distros and old boot partitions from when I was still using GRUB.

The laptop did come with a small SSD with Windows 11 on it. When I first got the laptop I did briefly boot to the start of the Windows 11 setup just to confirm that the laptop was booting, before shutting it down an replacing that SSD with the SSD from my old laptop.

The custom PC and laptop building company I bought it from might have been using Windows when QAing and testing the laptop after custom building it for me.

Regarding the iommu kernel parameters, that's a leftover from 2 laptops ago when I was using LibVF.IO.

I've now moved those parameters to their own .conf file in /etc/cmdline.d and commented them all out, and ran mkinitcpio -P

I also tried with the normal kernel, but still the same result.

Re: [HARDWARE DEFECT] Nvidia driver crashing

It turns out it's a hardware issue rather than a software issue, because I've now tried it in Windows and it's having similar issues there as well.

I've requested an RMA.

This thread can be deleted, because it turns out this issue has nothing to do with Arch or the Nvidia Linux drivers in general.

Re: [HARDWARE DEFECT] Nvidia driver crashing

You can either report it for the dustbin or change "[SOLVED]" to "[HARDWARE DEFECT]" or so.

Moderator Note :

It's still a laptop issue and may help others with similar symptoms.
I'm ok with the thread staying here.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

why people have this bad reddit attitude to always delete thier posts and accounts when it turns out the topic maybe wasn't so good?

Re: [HARDWARE DEFECT] Nvidia driver crashing

In this case however RogerS_01 figured it was off-topic and didn't want to dilute the forum.
But if that was the case, no arch user would ever know the single most important thing about their system:
If something doesn't work and there's a cable involved - it's because of the cable.
