Cannot access -kol.deviantart.com with firefox on linux

For some reason I cannot access the URL -kol.deviantart.com using firefox on Arch. It works very well in IE on my wife's Windows box. Can someone explain to me why this doesn't work in linux and perhaps give a solution. smile

Re: Cannot access -kol.deviantart.com with firefox on linux

Although I cannot currently offer any advice, I can second the inability to access -Kol's site using Firefox on Arch.  A quick and dirty test seems to show that I am also unable to reach the site with either links or a ping.

My buddy across the hall can access the site using Windows XP with Firefox.

Thirded - anything I try basically says http://-kol.deviantart.com is an "unknown host" - dunno why though.

I assume it must be the leading hyphen in the subdomain that is causing the problem. I assume this is a broader issue if pinging also doesn't work correctly. I'm going to boot a live cd distro and test a few other browsers.

Re: Cannot access -kol.deviantart.com with firefox on linux

yeah, i remember coming across this a long while back.

linux follows the standard of not allowing a leading or trailing hyphen in a domain (or any sub-domain). windows, on the other hand, happily ignores this standard.

there is a workaround for this. you can add the domain to your /etc/hosts file, using the ip address you'd get from pinging deviantart.com.

69.28.181.43 -kol.deviantart.com

of course, you'll have to add any other sub-domains you find that don't work.

What about http://kol.deviantart.com/? Is that the correct site?

I used to be able to access -kol's site from my Arch box with no problem (as recently as within the last month, I think).  Any idea what might have caused the change?

really? it should never have worked... unless you had installed some sort of workaround and have forgotten about it. this is definitely not a recent development.
