My sound system doesn't appear to be set up correctly.
1. There is no sound when KDE starts up, and pressing the "Sound Test" button in Control Center>Sound and Multimedia>Sound System doesn't generate any sound.
2. When I try to direct record audio from the DSP (e.g. audio originating from an audio stream from the Internet), the utilities rec (from sox) or arecord (from alsa-utils) do write a .wav file but when I try to replay that file with play or aplay or XMMS, the volume is extremely low. Even with the volume all the way turned up I can only hear the barest hint of what's been recorded.
My hardware: Intel 82801G HDA controller with SigmaTel STAC9200 chipset
Driver: snd-hda-intel.
My audio mixer settings (from alsamixer or KMix):
Output:
Master: ON 75%
PCM: (no ON/OFF option) 75%
Capture Mux: 75%
Input:
Capture: ON 75%
Capture Mux: ON 75%
Switches:
IEC958 ON
Input Source: Mic
It strikes me as odd that the input source is Mic and that there are no other options for input source. I also don't understand why there are multiple Capture sliders and what their purpose is.
Aside from the two failures mentioned, the sound system seems to be working OK. I can play audio CD's and movies, receive streaming audio and record it with VLC, KRec, Audacity, etc.
What do I need to change?

this is not sure, but maybe you need to add dmix to your alsa configuration
