Title says my question pretty much exactly, I want MPV to use my integrated GPU instead of my discrete one. I have added the foolowing line to my my mpv.conf
hwdec=vaapi
vo=vaapi
this used to work, but when I went to load a video today it just didn't

I think the main question is why it would use your GPU itfp, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardwa … ing_VA-API but you'll have to elaborate on the setup (hardware, display server, configuration)

I've also had this problem since my last -Syu yesterday. I use a Nvidia Optimus laptop (GE62VR 7RF Apache Pro with a 1060m), and now every time I open mpv there's a delay.
I notice the LED on my power button changes from blue to red, which I think indicates a program (mpv) is probing the different GPUs available to it, and the Nvidia GPU takes a couple of seconds to wake up. Very irritating! The same thing happens with Chromium and Discord since forever, but those two are liveable because I keep them open and the delay only happens once.
For mpv I'm using a band-aid fix of --vo=vdpau with libvdpau-va-gl installed, but the quality isn't the best.
I just need a way to force mpv to use the integrated GPU, without probing all the available GPUs first.

Update: I'm looking through my /var/log/pacman.log and I don't see mpv listed in my most recent upgrade. I do however see mesa, gegl, glfw, linux, linux-firmware-* and others. Not to cast aspersions to any of those, but it may be worth me/us investigating those packages to see if we're looking at the wrong 'layer', ie it's not an mpv issue but one of those GPU drivers situations where we need __FOO_BAR_GPU_NVIDIA_SUCKS_1_... environment variables setting lol

Update: Downgrading mesa works, not sure if it's the root cause, I'm just surprised it seems not to be a Nvidia issue lmao. I shouldn't have doubted the mpv devs either :kneel:
My system upgraded mesa-1:25.1.7-1 -> mesa-1:25.2.1-4 checking the pacman.log. The former version doesn't cause the 'GPU probing?' (I'm looking at the LED and there's no delay in opening mpv), the latter does have the problem. I also have mesa-1:25.2.1-1 in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and downgrading to that version also has the problem.
So "has something nontrivial occurred between mesa-1:25.1.7-1 and mesa-1:25.2.1-1 ?" is my next line of question, and yes the issue occurs in the latest available version mesa-1:25.2.1-5

I think I've fixed it, by installing 'vulkan-intel'
I played around with some demos from 'mesa-demos' and 'mesa-utils' and they opened instantly, in particular 'glxheads' which shows some GL info, and 'glxgears' (classic), so I twigged it might not be an OpenGL issue, so perhaps it's Vulkan instead.
I installed 'vulkan-tools' and went to try 'vulkaninfo' but got 'ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : vkCreateInstance: Found no drivers!'. So I installed 'vulkan-intel' (which apparently is meant to be part of mesa?) and it works, spitting out all the Vulkan capabilities etc. Opening mpv with 'vulkan-intel' installed works with no delay / gpu probing, as it did in the older version of mesa. 'vulkan-tools', 'mesa-demos', 'mesa-utils', 'libvdpau-va-gl' are not necessary (though I do have 'libvdpau' (the non -va-gl pkg) installed since forever as a dependency for mpv)
I do get a new warning from mpv when using it on the command line that I haven't seen before: 'MESA-INTEL: warning: ../mesa-25.2.1/src/intel/vulkan/anv_formats.c:979: FINISHME: support more multi-planar formats with DRM modifiers', but maybe that's just a TODO that'll be squashed by mesa devs. I'm having a brief look at the diff between the packages mesa-1:25.1.7-1 and mesa-1:25.2.1-1 but I don't know what I'm looking for to be honest. I thought it might be a package split, that is 'vulkan-intel' split from 'mesa' but I don't see a significant size difference in the two versions of mesa. I'm happy I've solved my (hopefully your?) issue.
tldr: check if 'vulkan-intel' is missing from your system. I don't need any of vo=vdpau, gpu-api=vulkan, hwdec=vulkan in my mpv.conf; my config doesn't have any special gpu settings.

I have found a solution that works as of right now. I added the configuration line:
vo=wlshm
I found this by using the command line:
mpv --vo=help
as suggested by seth. the output describes this option as "Wayland SHM video output (software scaling)" and I do not know yet what this means exactly. If one more knowledgeable than I could explain both to me and to othe readers it wouldl be great, however aside from this the thread could be closed in my opinion.
