Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

This might be an open/shut case, but thought to ask anyway.

AMD machine, Ryzen 7900/RX 7600.  I downgraded WINE to 9.21 to get some VSTis running properly (this computer is mainly for audio production).  Testing out gaming on the same install, getting repeated (predictable) crashes with Steam/Proton games (Bottles affected too).  Native Linux gaming is very nice, stable, no problems, so it's definitely (?) not hardware.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam played for ~2 hours without a hitch, no changes to any compatibility settings needed.  Valheim, Monster Hunter: World, Total War: Attila, and Kenshi all CTD within 10 minutes of loading assets (that's between Steam and Bottles, no difference).  I can sit in a start/login screen, go through menus all I want, even spend hours in character creation, but loading into a game world initiates more-or-less predictable countdown to destruction.

Have done all the usual (and not so usual) things: different versions of Proton/GE, force wined3d, overlays off, run Steam games via Lutris with Gamescope, usr/lib/steam vs. usr/bin/steam, windowed vs. fullscreen mode, flatpak vs. repository, swap out all graphics drivers (except amdgpupro/amdvlk?), went through BIOS settings to see if any potential cause there.  A couple of those things (e.g. GE-Proton 10.15 for MHW) delayed CTDs, but still result in CTDs.

I'm probably incredibly stupid and haven't understood that retaining system WINE at version 9.21 is forcing certain libraries to be outdated that Proton/Bottles tend to rely on (but not with Rising Storm 2?).  I was under the impression that Steam etc. "did their own WINEs," but now anticipating that this doesn't include dependencies.  If that's what's going on, consider this solved and I'll do a separate install for any gaming.

If, on the other hand, there's something more interesting going on, here are some core dumps/journal entries:

TW: Attila core dump
Valheim core dump and journal entry
Monster Hunter: World Proton log parts 1 & 2
Monster Hunter: World via Lutris with Gamescope core dump

Thanks in advance.

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

Hi,

If you give these coredumps to a KI, there are interesting points.
libc problems in 2 examples are displayed. The games are crashing not because of some hardware issues. Inconsistence libs seems to bee the problem.
I would uninstall all things you need for playing (steam, proton...). Than install native steam with pacman or paru, it will also install the neccessary proton. Start a game and check again.
Otherwise, ChatGPT brings good ideas for the coredumps.

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

ChatGPT has no clue about anything, don't ask it for advice

How exactly did you "downgrade wine to 9.2"? If you touched system libraries in an attempt to get a random wine binary working then I'd assume steam games not working will be the least of your problems on the next reboot.

Of these coredumps 2 out of 3 are from linux clients, which you claim to be working fine, the third coredump doesn't exist, the proton logs have one thing that's notable that you're apparently loading and using amdvlk, which you will want to get rid of regardless. make sure lib32-amdvlk and amdvlk are NOT installed, you generally don't want them.

Try to reproduce. If that didn't help

vulkaninfo --summary #vulkan-tools

is there anything out of the ordinary here, e.g. are you running your steam lib off of ntfs or so (it doesn't look like it but just to have asked). There has been a regression with pipewire audio buffers in 1.4.8-1 make sure you're up to date and pipewire on 1.4.8-2 and it restarted, though I don't see an indication of this issue.

Edit: On rechecking it does, what's /data ? If you are actually intending to use NTFS you need to setup a symlink from the ntfs drive, to a linux filesystem so that proton prefixes can get created in the correct environment, like described in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton … ead-errors and if you intend to do that, remove all proton versions and make sure that the proton versions get installed to a linux native filesystem/steam library. You can still install games onto NTFS, but make sure that everything relating to a proton version and the prefixes they create ultimately lands on a linux FS. FWIW after such a crash, what's your full output of

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

so we get more context of the surrounding crash.

Monitor temperatures and RAM use during this.
Does any of https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?K=unigine crash as well (assuming by "Native Linux gaming is very nice, stable" you meant sth. like ltris?)

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

On rereading this quoted section. There "used to be" a kernel bug where something along this line happened if you didn't have reBAR enabled. While it should™ be fixed, enabling reBAR is basically a win across the board anyway, so might want to check your UEFI on whether that's disabled and enabling it in case (or if it is, rule out something there and check what happens if you disable it)

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

Thanks all for the quick responses!

Some updates: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen ran for 2 hours yesterday with no issues at all using system WINE (9.21) on Lutris with GameMode.  Afterwards it crashed a couple of times loading assets/transitioning, but it did that on Windows anyway (i.e. game problem, not a system problem).

Have just had a kernel panic while testing it again this evening though, slightly more worrying.  Journal entry as follows:

The crash occurred about ten minutes after the log ends; would any details be recorded elsewhere?

I would uninstall all things you need for playing (steam, proton...). Than install native steam with pacman or paru, it will also install the neccessary proton. Start a game and check again.

I assumed trying the flatpak would work around that, but I'll try a proper reinstall at some point and let you know.  Thanks!

How exactly did you "downgrade wine to 9.2"? If you touched system libraries in an attempt to get a random wine binary working then I'd assume steam games not working will be the least of your problems on the next reboot.

Removed 10.15 and dependants, installed 9.21 from ALU, then Steam, Bottles, Lutris etc. over the top of that.  Basically this but trying to pre-empt breakage...

So far (some reboots later) so good, in fact I'd say this is the most stable OS I've had in years...  Main problem I've encountered is this gaming thing, every other issue has been solved through wiki/previous forum posts, some google/reddit.

Sorry for missing MHW dump, not sure what happened there.  Was there when I posted the link!

Colour me surprised, I imagined Valheim and TW: Attila were running Proton because they crashed.  Now I look into it it turns out these are native Linux builds that Steam provides.  So definitely not a WINE issue, but a Steam/Bottles issue?  Amended thread title accordingly.

Thanks for spotting amdvlk - removed, to no effect, but I never wanted it, so wondering how it got there (unlikely that I pacman/strapped it, since I'd certainly have included the lib32...  Can paru pull driver packages?  First time using AUR on this install, might have overlooked something?)

RADV/mesa, as generally recommended...  (this was before removing amdvlk)

is there anything out of the ordinary here, e.g. are you running your steam lib off of ntfs or so (it doesn't look like it but just to have asked). There has been a regression with pipewire audio buffers in 1.4.8-1 make sure you're up to date and pipewire on 1.4.8-2 and it restarted, though I don't see an indication of this issue.

Edit: On rechecking it does, what's /data ?

/data is an EXT4 partition for audio files, seemed the best place to put games libraries (very large partition).

Pipewire is 1.4.8-2.

Though, you've got me thinking - does setting sector size to 4KiB affect how we should partition drives (i.e. where to start/end partitions)?

On rereading this quoted section. There "used to be" a kernel bug where something along this line happened if you didn't have reBAR enabled. While it should™ be fixed, enabling reBAR is basically a win across the board anyway, so might want to check your UEFI on whether that's disabled and enabling it in case (or if it is, rule out something there and check what happens if you disable it)

Yes, I did see about this, and have tried reBAR on and off, with no discernible difference (actually turning it off seemed to stave off CTD for a couple of minutes, but only "seemed," could have just been some lucky long runs).  I went through a range of RAM and CPU settings to see if there were any obvious causes for instability there: no over/underclocking going on; EXPO was turned off which was a little odd, but turning it on makes no difference  As far as I can tell all settings are acceptable/functional even if not "optimal."

FWIW after such a crash, what's your full output of

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

so we get more context of the surrounding crash.

MH:W/Steam crash
Kenshi/Bottles crash

We've got a "wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF at address 00000001409FEC0D (thread 03d4), starting debugger..." on the latter (05:07:01), which looks closer to the source of the issue than the Xorg quibbling and firefox complaining about mesa overrides on the former...

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Does any of https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?K=unigine crash as well (assuming by "Native Linux gaming is very nice, stable" you meant sth. like ltris?)

Unigine ran perfectly fine, CPU maxed out at 70 degrees, GPU ~50, RAM usage under 10Gib (a significant chunk of which is firefox).  First thing I thought too was hardware issues, have tried a range of things to see if I can prove it but no luck so far.  As for Linux gaming being stable, well... apparently not, see above!

https://hastebin.com/share/aworakaruj.yaml Crashes in gamescope_wl, is this a problem in kwin_x11 sessions?

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

Possibly, I still use Xorg predominantly.  Have tried gaming on Wayland sessions before, but same crashes.

If I try to start a Wayland session now though (haven't tried since last week), I seem to get an endless black screen with mouse pointer that temporarily grows as I shake it.  Weird!

All of the crashes seem to involve GPU restarting.  Can't tell if GPU is restarting because of crash, or if GPU restarting is causing crash?  (In which case, what's causing GPU to restart?)

Errr… the crash you've posted *does* happen on wayland.

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

Looks like gamescope makes its own Wayland sessions to play games (?), but if I don't use gamescope they run on the regular X11 session (must be if windowed?)  Same crash either way.

I saw that link you've posted a couple of days ago, I have both plasma-x11-session and kwin-x11 - is the suggestion that I should try getting rid of the latter?  ("... wouldn't be ok... for every one using Plasma")

Thanks again for your help!

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

Last I know is that Steam exclusively runs on X11 (via xwayland on wayland sessions)
What's the output of

loginctl session-status

Do you also have an updated trace?
But assuming it's still relevant:

type -a gamescope gamescope-wl
pacman -Qo gamescope
pacman -Qo gamescope-wl

Re: Steam/Bottles games crashing ~10 minutes in

gamescope is /usr/bin/gamescope
bash: type: gamescope-wl: not found

/usr/bin/gamescope is owned by gamescope 3.16.17-1

error: No package owns gamescope-wl

No updated trace yet, will get another when I've got more time to test
