Kernel Panic on 6.17.3

I saw a kernel panic for the first time today. Was quiet shocked, thought machine was infected with malware, because I didn't know about systemds graphical bluescreen.
After reboot i realized, it happens again after a few minutes (3-5) every time I boot up the machine.

As I am not at all experienced in debugging this I took my best guess and removed tuxedo_keyboard module ( a module for the leds on my notebooks keyboard), because I found this line in the panic output:

This didn't fix it.
The notebook crashed again, but now with a different kernel panic:
(I upgraded to 6.17.4 because i thought that might fix it)

After that I thought I'd better check my RAM. I had memtest86 running for a few hours with several OK passes without problems.

OS is still crashing after 3-5 minutes into boot.

I downgraded the kernel now to 16.16.10 and it seems to be stable again. No crash after 20 min.

Could somebody with experience help me to debug this?

can you please also give current linux-lts a try to check whether something was backported which would be a regression?

Also please try the latest mainline kernel to see if it's fixed in 6.18 already:

I do my backups on monday mornings with the proxmox-backup-client (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/prox … kup-client). I think it *might* have something to do with it, because it runs once a week and the crashes happened when it ran. I will try  to debug this further. Is it possible, that a userspace program crashes the kernel in multiple different ways?

Could you try if re-running your backup triggers the crash again?
Also please check it with rc3:

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-mainline-6.18rc3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

If you can trigger it with that it would be interesting if it ever worked, which you could check by running the same reproducer on the LTS kernel or an older version of linux from the Archive (https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux/)

I think you mentioned 6.16.10 being stable for you, could you try that for example?

OK, I tested further. Triggered the backup.
6.18.0-rc2-1-mainline (which I used for a week without problems crashes within 5 minutes)

Installed 6.18.0-rc3-1-mainline
Triggered the backup.
Crashes within 5 minutes

Using 6.18.0-rc3-1-mainline without the backup seems to work.
I am using it right now and have 12min uptime.

Pretty sure now it's somehow connected to proxmox-backup-client.

Will try to go back now and see if older Kernels work. In general the backups worked fine for over a year. Never had any problems.

....seems to work. Up 15 minutes and no problems while the backup is running.

So it seems to be a change from 6.16.10 -> 6.17.1

If you need further infos or help from me, I'd be glad to help out.
I guess I would need some guidance though, because I have no experience in debugging kernel stuff at all.

Ftr, crypto_acomp_lock_stream_bh wasn't touched between 6.16.12 and 6.17.0 and didn't exist before 2.16

Sorry to say this, but I don't feel particularly comfortable installing kernels on my system from people I don't know.
I trusted @gromit RC because of his special role in the Arch community but I don't know a thing about loqs.

This is in no way meant to be an insinuation or an attack on @loqs, but I would prefer to build the kernels myself, if possible.
It would be great if you could just provide me with the commands I need. I haven't had time to read the wiki yet.

@loqs has a long history of helping with regressions and other issues in the forums. However, it's always good to check. Also, being able to do the work yourself is also good.
