Gnome Annoyance: No middle/rightclick maximize of windows?

Just playing around with the Gnome 2.18 Foresight VMware image. I am not a Gnome guy, so please someone tell me:

Is there any way, to enable vertical / horizontal maximization of windows by middle- / right-clicking on the maximize icon in the windows titelbar, like it is common for most other DEs / WMs?

How strange, Metacity DOES offer the possibility to vertically / horizontally maximize a windows! I found it in the keyboard-shortcuts config-GUI. Unfortunately this only works using a keyboard-shortcut, but it can not be configured with any of the config-GUIs, to use the desired mousebutton action (middle-/right-click on the window's maximize icon).

Nobody any idea? I was hoping for some additional/hidden config possibilities.

MHhh, did you search gconf already? It would be nice to adjust that behaviour.

There seems to be no possibility, to achieve the desired behaviour, which is very strange, because why should the Metacity devs include that very common functionality, to then have it only available by keyboard shortcut, but not by single mouseclick? Took a look at gconf -> apps -> metacity, but there are no additional tweaks there. I posted that issue in the Gnome forum as well, but the only useable feedback I got, was to use another WM with Gnome.

Works fine with emerald here, haven't tried it with metacity though.

It's a Metacity problem, if you use another WM (like Beryl), it's working of course (assuming that all the other WMs can do that).
