[SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

I am trying to get an external monitor to work by connecting it via the built-in HDMI slot.

The hardware is a HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 Laptop 16-aa0xxx, with an Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 155H × 22 using Intel® Arc™ Graphics (MTL) as GPU (no nvidia GPU present). I am using Wayland on Gnome.

I can connect external monitors via USB-C alright, but when I try to plug in a HDMI cable, the system does not seem to register that at all. No message shows up on dmesg or journalctl whatsoever upon pluggin in/off the HDMI cable that is connected to a monitor or TV. The somewhat smart TV recognizes though that something is being connected, however the notebook does not react in any way.

Since I did not find any trace of a reaction in either dmesg nor journalctl, I am a bit lost as to where else to look. Any suggestions?

Re: [SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

Do https://man.archlinux.org/man/gdctl.1 and/xor xrandr report the output?

Also

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/v4l-utils/

kernel messages are not expected but make sure you're not running on the simpledrm device (it will show up but i915 or xe should take over)

Re: [SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

With gdctl show --modes I only get the internal display (eDP-1) and a logical display.

Your command produces the following output: https://paste.c-net.org/CarpetsLengths

I am not sure how to detect whether I am running on the simpledrm device (but can that even be with linux-intel-firmware installed?).

Awesome respond time, seth. Kudos!

Re: [SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

card1 indicates that the intel drm has taken over, but there's no edid from HDMI-A-1
This was w/ a monitor attached?

Do you use i915 or xe? Does the other driver fare better?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _Xe_driver

There're also other errors from the driver that complain about pipes or link training? (Even before attaching the output)

Have you tried to boot w/ the monitor already attached or only to plug it while the system is already up?

Re: [SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

The output was with the monitor attached, yes.

I did not set up the system to use the xe driver so I suppose it would be using i915. However, when following the instructions you linked to enable the xe driver (I identified the PCI ID and added the kernel parameters temporarily in my boot loader systemd-linux), I have the same result. EDID for card0-HDMI-A-1 is still empty. I found some xe-related entries in dmesg: https://paste.c-net.org/DuranGenie

There're also other errors from the driver that complain about pipes or link training? (Even before attaching the output)

I am not quite sure what you mean or how I would find out about such errors if there were any. Would I have to look for them in journalctl? I get quite some errors regarding

ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating named object [\_SB.PC00.XHCI.RHUB.HS04._PLD], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20250404/dswload2-326)
ACPI Error: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20250404/psobject-220)

but I assume that is not related. Otherwise the journal looks ok-ish to me.

Have you tried to boot w/ the monitor already attached or only to plug it while the system is already up?

I also tried to boot with the monitor attached, but no change :oS

Re: [SOLVED] No HDMI output on Intel Notebook

Update: reading up the intel graphics site you linked I found out that I did not enable GuC / HuC firmware loading (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … re_loading). I rebooted without forcing the xe driver and setting "options i915 enable_guc=3" in /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf, and voilà, I have an output on the HDMI interface.

Thank you for nudging me into the right direction!
