This has been occurring for a long time. Whenever SDDM loads, or whenever I log out, or whenever I switch virtual terminals (not always), the GRUB screen appears for a short period of time, which shows the usual messages:
Loading Linux linux ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...This is not (GRUB) theme specific - I have tested this with the default GRUB theme and it still happens.
However, I have also tested removing the splash argument and the GRUB screen does not appear anymore, so I suspect it is a problem with plymouth.

You're seeing a framebuffer switch and what's there when it's not covered by plymouth.
