I met across this issue after trying to type caret (^) followed by SPACE on GNOME, same thing happens when I try to type tilde (~). It's only possible to type such dead keys followed by allowed words, no SPACE.
Doing it on Linux terminal works just fine, this issue seems only to happen on GNOME.
Any hints on the reason or configuration suggestions to circumvent the issue is welcome.
Regards.

I happen to find out I need to type RIGHT ALT (or any other alternative character key defined on GNOME Settings) before typing the dead key. Still, I wonder if it is possible to return to the original way of typing dead keys followed by SPACE. If not, it's fine. I guess GNOME developers had something in mind with it.

Thank you. This solution is useful. Did you find anyway to return the old behaviour of inserting deadkeys after SPACE?

Does shift+space still work as <space> for you? I've seen ppl claiming this has changed as well on gnome (space is omitted when holding <shift>). This might be a problem for fast typers.
