Chrome flickering with latest update

Is there a bug either in Nvidia's drivers or kernel ?

Strange flickering behavior with Chrome browser.
Possibly other flickering too..but I was too busy to downgrade (solve issue).

Some info of computer: Intel Xeon E3-1290 V2, Nvidia Quadro K620

Here's from the start, what I did.
I updated my computer (arch), these went in

linux-6.18.1.arch1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
nvidia-580.119.02-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
nvidia-utils-580.119.02-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Downgrading to

linux-6.17.9.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
nvidia-580.105.08-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
nvidia-utils-580.105.08-5-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

did solve the problem. No more flickering.

I had a feeling that Nvidia drivers and kernel have some kind of dependence, so that both must be downgraded.
I first tried downgrade only kernel => 'no screens'.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

Hi,

It's not just Chrome - but IntelliJ products, some Java Swing based GUIs that I use and even the i3status clock is going nuts - flickering between seconds.

Linux foo 6.12.62-1-lts #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat, 13 Dec 2025 08:31:12 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
linux-lts 6.12.62-1

and

Name : nvidia-dkms
Version : 580.119.02-1

Something has regressed, or not caught up :-)

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

Might be a general problem but does either of you NOT use HDMI monitor?
Both X11?
@dharrigan, what GPU (generation) do you have?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply, here are the details:

On monitor 1, It's mDP.
On monitor 2, it's mDP.

Yes, using X11.

Graphics:
  Device-1: NVIDIA AD106 [GeForce RTX 4060 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 580.119.02
Device-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Granite Ridge [Radeon Graphics]

Hope that helps. Do let me know if you require further information.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

I have a Samsung SM245B lcd monitor connected to KVM switch, and KVM switch to computer. All D-Sub connections. X11. Xorg.
The startup font (I boot into text screen / cmd line first) is also different than before.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

Same flickering for me in applications (even the i3 clock and the conky monitor, and my terminal running Vim). I downgraded just my nvidia, leaving the kernel at the most recent one. This seems to have been good enough.

Thanks RevenantX for finding the link.

Specs of my system in case it helps with seeing what conditions are needed to cause the flickering:

Output of `inxi -G`:

Graphics:
  Device-1: NVIDIA GA102 [GeForce RTX 3090] driver: nvidia v: 580.105.08
Device-2: Logitech HD Webcam C615 driver: snd-usb-audio,uvcvideo type: USB

API: OpenGL Message: Unable to show GL data. glxinfo is missing.
  Info: Tools: de: xfce4-display-settings gpu: nvidia-smi x11: xprop,xrandr

Relevant `xrandr` outputs:

And the now-downgraded Nvidia packages from (`pacman -Qs | grep nvidia`):

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

Following a suggestion from marq in the Nvidia forums, I did this:

As a quick hack you could try enable Nvidia’s compositor pipeline from the control panel – X Server Display Configuration – Advanced. If you already did, never mind smile

And things appear to have stablised.

I may consider reverting the driver today depending on how that hack works out...

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

I downgraded to previous kernel and nvidia driver. With the latest ones on xfce/xorg everyting is laggy and tearing just drives me crazy.

Just for the sake of testing tried latest nvidia driver with linux-lts. Same lagging and same tearing. Seems the issue is with nvidia driver.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

Hi,

I reverted back to nvidia 580.105.08 as the "quick hack" didn't work consistently. Reverting has worked.

Thank you! This helped me. Using xfce/x11.

Another quick fix, in xfce is to disable "display compositing" Go to XFCE Settings -> Window Manager Tweaks -> Tab Compositor -> uncheck Enable display compositing.

Rejoiced too soon. It's only slightly better. Windows and menus continue to flicker. I downgraded the driver to version 580.105.08-5. Now everything works as it should.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

It's a driver issue, confirmed by Nvidia:

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

As a workaround i disabled the XFCE compositor (Settings - Window Manager Tweaks - Compositor). Makes the tearing go away.

New version of nvidia-dkms package dropped on repo (renamed to nvidia-open-dkms). After update it's still happening.

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

This stopped the flickering for me. Using XFCE with the compositor enabled.

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode -t string -s "off" --create

Re: Chrome flickering with latest update

@Skilowi, nvidia-open and nvidia open are different kernel modules (drivers) from nvidia
nvidia-open will become nvidia and nvidia-580xx (the last closed source driver) has now been dropped into the AUR
Pre-turing users will have to migrate to that and if you've problems w/ the nvidia-open + GSP driver you'll have resort to it as well.
