Help solving a wireless problem

Hey all,

I have a wireless problem I can't figure out.  The card is installed and works perfectly fine at my house, but I can't get an ip address from school.  Here's what I know:

# iwlist scan
(relevant lines)
ESSID:"handi"
Encryption key:off
Quality=72/100
# ifconfig eth2 up
# iwconfig eth2 essid "handi"
# dhclient eth2
(after several attempts)
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping

I know my card works because it does at home.  I know the network works because other people use it.  My guess is that something needs to be configured differently, but what?

Re: Help solving a wireless problem

Have you tried with dhcpcd? It seems to work better in my opinion than dhclient.

My school gave me that error once a day when I tried to connect. Now with dhcpcd no errors. This was even if I was trying to cennect directly instead of wirelessly.

Otherwise check the modes are correct etc.

Good to know.  Unfortunately it just sat there and then gave up.

Alright.  I don't know anything about modes.  The scan said my network was in master mode, so I switched my wireless card to that and still nothing.  Here's the full output, since I get the feeling I don't know enough to know what's relevant:

# iwlist scan eth2
Address: 00:14:6A:C5:11:F0
ESSID: "handi"
Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
Mode:Master
Channel:4
Encryption key:off
Bit Rates:1Mb/s... (lots intermediate speeds)... 54Mb/s
Quality=72/100 Singal level=-75dBm Noise Level=-73dBm
Extra: Last Beacon: 328ms ago

# iwconfig eth2
IEEE 802b/g ESSID:"handi" Nickname:"Broadcom 4318"
Mode:Master Frequency=2.484 GHz Access Point: Invalid
Bit Rate=1Mb/s Tx-Power=18dBm
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=0/100 Signal level=-256 dBm Noise level=-256dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

# dhcpcd -d eth2
dhcpcd: MAC address = 00:11:50:67:a6:94
