SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

For starters, thanks to the Arch Wiki maintainers for the excellent documentation https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Framework_Laptop_16

I received my Framework Laptop 16 today (AMD Ryzen AI 300 series with the NVIDIA expansion GPU) and did a fresh Arch Linux install. My previous laptop was a System76 Oryx Pro (hybrid iGPU + NVIDIA) so I was epecting juggling the MUX and optimus to work sorta like that.

I’m running into an issue where SDDM consistently shows only a black screen, even though under its journal logs it says its firing up and working fine. Ive tried tweaking and modifying its config but I cant force it to behave any differently.

What works:
Switching to another TTY and running startplasma-wayland
Plasma Wayland session is fully usable
    startx + startplasma-x11 also works
What I’ve tried:
Forcing SDDM to X11 only (DisplayServer=x11, Wayland disabled)
    Explicitly setting the Breeze theme
    Reinstalling sddm, plasma-workspace, and breeze
Pinning SDDM to a specific /dev/dri/card*

Re: SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
There's an ongoing pattern where SDDM starts before the GPU is initialized and then the display server crashes - can you boot the multi-user.target and "systemctl start sddm" from there?

Re: SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

I did see that current fix! I tried adding 3, 5 and 9 seconds to the startup but it didn't seem to help me. And I can start and stop sddm from another tty but, its the same effect every time. Just black, so I wasn't able to take advantage of just moving over and starting sddm again like some other people.

Re: SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

The server runs on the nvidia GPU in reverse prime (all the outputs are attached to the AMD GPU)
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "layout"
        Screen 0 "amd"
        Inactive "nvidia"
        Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Device "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "amd"
        Driver "modesetting"
        BusID "PCI:194:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "amd"
        Device "amd"
EndSection

should take care of that but provides a static configuration that will get you into trouble when switching to nvidia only in the BIOS.

Wow that absolutely fixed it. I am in awe, thank you.

I can understand the switching trouble if I did want to do NVIDIA only but, I cant imagine what i'd do about that. Plus, im not sure what utulity NVIDIA only would give. I think iGPU only would be more useful but. Thank you very much, I think I'll mark this as solved

Re: SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

I *think* this only happens because of the "weird" BusIDs (unlike the typical 1:0:0/0:2:0) and maybe the simpledrm device flipping the card order.
See whether you can get away w/

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amd_hack.conf

Section "Device"
        Identifier "amd"
        Driver "modesetting"
        BusID "PCI:194:0:0"
EndSection

(really only  the device section) and remove the xorg.conf w/ the static server layout (you can temporarily move it to your $HOME or so but don't just rename it)

Re: SDDM Black Screen on Framework 16

I tried with the shorter 10-amd_hack.conf but, didn't have a lot of success. I really think the card1 and card0 are backwards so, maybe setting an env like KWIN_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/card1 or KWIN_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/card1:/dev/dri/card0 might be best if i want the auto-set to work?

using this full config worked great for me though, ty

        Screen 0 "amd"
        Inactive "nvidia"
        Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Driver "nvidia"

Section "Screen"

        Device "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "amd"

the simpledrm device flipping the card order

add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

KWIN_DRM_DEVICES will only be relevant for plasma/wayland resp. when configuring SDDM to use wayland w/ kwin_wayland as compositor
