ah they have been lower cased ...
xf86cfg is gui, which requires a keypad, SOL if you have a laptop
xf86config is the old school text setup

there is always X -configure and then edit the resulting template to add the few settings you will need (refrsh rates, modelines and mouse/touchpad setup)
