Repeated black screens, NVidia 1070 probable cause.

Hello!

Since the move to the open drivers, I've had to use the AUR NVidia drivers for day to day stuff, but I have noticed since the move, sometimes when I alt-tab through things a few times in a short period, Wayland and/or Xorg crashes and makes my entire screen go blank. The only way I have been able to resolve this somewhat gracefully is to alt+ctrl+F3, log in as root, and reboot.

I use sddm as the login manager, which I think was just the default when I installed. I use KDE Plasma as my DE.

My `Xorg.0.log.old` (from the last time it happened is:

Re: Repeated black screens, NVidia 1070 probable cause.

Please use [ code ] not [ quote ] for outputs.

There's no obvious error here. After having been forced to reboot and from the new boot post

sudo journalctl -b-1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

and check and verify what your actual session is and try to use Xorg instead (Wayland is generally the default unless you followed https://archlinux.org/news/plasma-640-w … re-on-x11/

Maybe also throw in

printenv XDG_SESSION_TYPE
glxinfo -B
pacman -Qs 'kernel|nvidia'

but just from a xorg perspective the correct driver looks to be loaded

Re: Repeated black screens, NVidia 1070 probable cause.

My bad about the quotes, changed to code now.

`sudo journalctl -b-1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st output`

And the other three things:

wayland

XID 32 is "Invalid or corrupted push buffer stream", https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/xid-erro … bdma-error

This event is logged when a fault is reported by the DMA controller which manages the communication stream between the NVIDIA driver and the GPU over the PCI-E bus. These failures primarily involve quality issues on PCI, and are generally not caused by user application actions.

Try to disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … P_firmware ("nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0") and if that doesn't help "pcie_aspm=off", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

Re: Repeated black screens, NVidia 1070 probable cause.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried both of these things now, and unfortunately still have this problem.

I am pretty flummoxed as of now, thanks for your help.

Re: Repeated black screens, NVidia 1070 probable cause.

If you've ensured that the parameters actually applied and GSP and ASPM are recorded as disabled in the running system I'd inspect the HW, ensure you're using a PEG slot and in doubt re-seat the GPU and make sure the dedicated power connector is properly attached.
