Recently (about 1 month) my desktop starts to freeze randomly, without any hardware changes. It could freeze whatever I'm doing, eg. watching video, playing games on steam, or writing some code in Android Studio, but it mostly happens in Android Studio though ...
When it happens, the screen got freezed, the speaker repeats a buffer about 0.5s, does not responsd to ping from lan, the magic sysrq REISUB does not work, caps lock light on keyboard does not blink. The only way to shutdown is long press the power button on the case. After a reboot, there is nothing in journalctl, the last log was minutes before crash.
Then I've tried to setup netconsole and simple-kdump (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump# … mple-kdump), confimed that a manual sysrq-trigger would reboot and save vmcore.kdump under /var/crash, and waited for the reproduce. But unfortunatelly when it crashes again, the netconsole was totaly slient, even kdump did not trigger. I've waited several minutes before press the power button, yet after a reboot there was no kdump files created. The only information I have is the log from netconsole before crash: https://fars.ee/IVzz
I've also tried the LTS kernel 6.12, it still crashes. I've updated the BIOS and turned off EXPO (memory overclock?) in the firmware setup, cleaned up some dust and re-plug the memory and graphic card, ran memtest86+ for 2 hours, it did not report any errors either, but when I reboot into the system and decide to get some work done in Android Studio, it crashes again ...
Please help to provide some suggestion on how to further diagnose this kind of issue, thanks.

I've been experiencing the same issue for about the same time. The whole system frequently freezes (about every 10 min to 2h). So far I've only experienced the crash when IntelliJ IDEA (with Android plugin if that is relevant) is running.
What I've tried:
- Switching to TTY: does not work
- Sysrq REISUB: does not work (but does when trying on a non-crashed system)
- Kdump: does not work, system stays in frozen state; works when testing with a manual sysrq-trigger
- Switched to linux-lts: still freezes
- Replaced my RX 7800 XT with a Nvidia 2060 super: still freezes
- stress-ng and gputest simultaneously for a couple of minutes: runs stable
- memtest86+: no errors
- Downgraded linux-firmware-* to a version from sometime in June 2025: still freezes
- S.M.A.R.T. shows no errors
- Tried several kernel parameters for amdgpu freezes (e.g. amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10): does not help
- Tried: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen#Troubleshooting
- Tried: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Solid_ … leshooting
- There is no output relevant to the crash in journalctl or dmesg (even when sudo journalctl -f and sudo dmesg -w are running and visible at the time of the crash)
At this point I no longer know what else to try.

There are many threads about freezes/crashes of systems with AMD CPUs. Most often it is related to power saving (disable power saving in bios or by kernel parameters - cstates), undervolted CPUs or with memory working not stable with high frequencies with motherboard - lower memory frequency in bios, disable overclocking - expo, xmp profiles. It is better slower system, but stable.

I tried setting processor.max_cstate=5 as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen# … k_freezing. I also tried the other potential fixes described on that page including increasing the voltage of the cpu with the PBO+4 curve. Unfortunately, nothing fixed the issue for me.
The issue seems to be heavily related to JetBrains IDEs (or at least triggered by them). After two days of using my computer without opening IntelliJ I have not encountered a freeze. Just now I opened IntelliJ again and a freeze occurred just a couple of minutes after opening.
Any ideas on how to debug this issue?

It's the same for me. I have been using the PC continuously with Arch for two years and did not have these problems before. Because of this, I don't think my AMD CPU is to blame.
For me, it also always occurs when I have IntelliJ open. I'll try processor.max_cstate=1.
Offline
Setting processor.max_cstate=1 did not help. The SSH connection also breaks off and can no longer be used. Journalctrl (monitored via SSH) did not output anything unusual before the freeze.
The keyboard lighting also switches off with the freeze.

Downgrading IntelliJ IDEA also does not seem to fix the issue.
I went down as far as 2024.3.7 which was released well before I started experiencing freezes and it still caused the system to freeze.
Therefore, something else is causing these freezes but is clearly triggered by IntelliJ (still no freezes with it not open and freezes every couple of minutes when open).

You can try to downgrade cpu microcode to some previous version.

I switched to the LTS kernel yesterday and haven't had a freeze since. But there were also updates for the JetBrains plugins, so I don't know exactly if the problem is fixed or why.
$ uname -r
6.12.66-1-ltsOffline
In my case updating all plugins and switching to the LTS kernel does not fix the issue, unfortunately. Downgrading the microcode doesn't fix it either.
This is a very frustrating issue considering there seems to be no way of actually debugging what's wrong without blindly trying different workarounds.

Just to be on the safe side: Did you check if the LTS kernel was loaded and not the stable kernel?
Your system is pretty similar to mine (ASUS mainboard, AMD CPU, KDE, Wayland)

Okay, now I've had another freeze after 15 hours.
For me:
Did you suspend/resume the system at this time?
No, never.
Do you only write code in AS or do you also have some device attached?
I mainly use GoLand, sometimes PyCharm. I think it generally occurs when using the Jetbrain IDEs. No smartphones/tablets connected, but some other things. (Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam, External SSD, Bluetooth Devices, External Soundcard)

Tomorrow I will try to collect helpful information with Netconsole.

This was actually specific to aspects of the OP.
Because of this, I don't think my AMD CPU is to blame.
For me, it also always occurs when I have IntelliJ open. I'll try processor.max_cstate=1.
nb. that this is a aggravating condition, can you control PBO in the firmware (uefi), notably do you have access to a curve optimizer?
Alternatively, can you stabilize the system w/ corectrl?

Did you suspend/resume the system at this time?
I cannot remember exactly now. But I should be using the computer and those xhci_hcd messages was logged minutes before the system freeze.
Do you only write code in AS or do you also have some device attached?
I did not have devices attached when it freezes, but I do use android emulator form google, which seems to be qemu.
In doubt detach the aura controller and replace the input devices w/ $5 office-supply regular s…tuff.
The "aura controller" should be embedded with the motherboard, I did not install it by myself. The input devices should be normal USB keyboard and mouse and do not require special "driver" to function, which I've been using with the computer for more than 2 years ..
I've downgraded amd-ucode to 20251125-2 and experienced a freeze again. Here's my `inxi -F` output:

I noticed that we are all using ASUS motherboards and 3 out of 4 are B650 series. Is it a coincidence?

do not require special "driver" to function
That's besides the point.
19 is ENODEV, this more commonly happens on wakeups but rather not mid-session, so the question is whether this indicates the cause or the fallout.
When coding you're probably typing a lot (and fast)?
Can you trigger this just spamming random input (w/o AS)?
Is it a coincidence?
Maybe not but nb. that they're very common.
The most likely cause is actually the early on linked https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen#Troubleshooting - if you can disable PBO or tune the curve optimizer that's always worth a shot to see whether it stabilizes the system.

nb. that this is a aggravating condition, can you control PBO in the firmware (uefi), notably do you have access to a curve optimizer?
Alternatively, can you stabilize the system w/ corectrl?

PBO is deactivated. Basically, all fancy overclocking or tuning parameters are disabled.
I am still waiting for a freeze to evaluate the Netconsole output.

As I can remember, the freeze usually happens when I'm actively using the computer, rather than wakeups. As for "systemctl suspend" or the "Sleep" function from desktop environment, I never use them.

I don't think I'm typing that fast, when coding I usually need some time to think ...
Today I've been working for several hours in vscode without freezing, and I tried spamming both keyboard and the mouse, it seems all fine.

I've never touched PBO settings, but the default seems to be "Auto". I tried to disable it, and experienced another freeze after about half an hour of some random working in Android Studio. Now I've set the curve to +4 to see whether it will help.

OK it crashes again when I'm watching a Youtube video while leave Android Studio running the background. I will try set the curve to +6 then.

It just crashes again when playing Youtube video while leave Android Studio and emulator in the background idling. Now I really don't know what to try next.

Have you *ever* witnessed such crash w/o AS running at all?
