Front headphone jack produces no sound despite graphical indications

At the start of my Arch/KDE session (with KWin on Wayland and pipewire/wireplumber as the audio stack), the front headphone jack on my PC is not working reliably. Occasionally, it works from boot, but most of the time it is silent. Both pavucontrol and the plasma-pa audio manager do show the audio device (USB Audio Front Headphones) and correctly register when headphones are plugged in or unplugged, and show that a sound signal is being send to the device, even if no audio is being heard.

I have external speakers (Creative Pebble X Plus speakers connected by USB) and those work without issue. The headphones I use also work fine on different devices. I have a dual boot setup with Windows (fast startup is disabled) and all audio works there without trouble. I have tested this with Firefox and VLC, and they do not behave any differently with regards to this issue.

There are only two things that seem to resolve the issue, though temporarily: removing ~/.local/state/wireplumber/ and restarting wireplumber.service, and toggling mute in pavucontrol (which is not very reliable; it only works half the time).

I have also happened upon these threads ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=297210 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=265732 ) which describe aspects of this issue, and I see the same warnings about the decibel range in my journalctl log: https://0x0.st/PZJI.txt

Here's the output of pactl info while playing audio through Firefox before attempting to reset wireplumber.service or touching pavucontrol:

Re: Front headphone jack produces no sound despite graphical indications

Just adding that removing ~/.local/wireplumber/ and restarting wireplumber.service also seems to be unreliable; now I'm finding that it won't get the front headphones to work.

Re: Front headphone jack produces no sound despite graphical indications

After doing some more digging, it may be due to the Realtek ALC4082 chipset on my motherboard (ASRock Z790 PG/ITX-TB4), which seems to be causing the ALSA devs headaches: https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-uc … issues/541

There was an issue specifically for my motherboard, which was closed some time ago: https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-uc … issues/334

However, I'm also wondering if there may be some other underlying issue, possibly with Intel HD Audio, because of one particular line I consistently get in journalctl:

Jan 27 02:59:44 westerlund kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: no codecs found!

I read somewhere that the sof-firmware drivers might actually be the ones I need (snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl, see https://superuser.com/questions/1867307 … inkpad-l14 ), but the kernel seems not to use them and I'm not sure how I would switch to the other (or perhaps it's already being used).

Re: Front headphone jack produces no sound despite graphical indications

After some further testing, I think I have some way of reliably unmuting the headphone jack, but it's weird. I have to switch the current audio stream (usually I just play a video in Firefox) to a hidden device (labeled USB Audio Speakers), cycle the mute state the application stream in pavucontrol, switch back to the front headphone jack, and cycle its mute state. To be honest, I'm not even sure where that device is coming from.

Also, if I try to use aplay to play any sound through the headphone jack (aplay --device surround71:CARD=Audio,DEV=0 -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav), that ends up muting the headphone jack. Repeating the mute cycle procedure brings back the audio.

When I look in the journal, I also see a lot of error messages from graphical applications that are related to ALSA: https://0x0.st/PNdc.txt

I'm starting to wonder if this might have something to do with KDE, but

One last thing: attempting to force the snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl driver over snd_hda_intel caused the module insertion to fail:

Jan 27 06:24:59 westerlund kernel: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
Jan 27 06:24:59 westerlund kernel: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: the DSP is not enabled on this platform, aborting probe

so I reverted it back to using snd_hda_intel as it was before. But I do find the error message interesting.

Re: Front headphone jack produces no sound despite graphical indications

And after some more fiddling around with the audio, I managed to get this error from Pipewire (I was rapidly toggling mute, which may explain why the same error is showing up multiple times)
