I use Beryl with KDE (emerald theme manager) and I can't stand when beryl does it's "fancy footwork" on an app that doesn't like it.
For example..
1) java apps like limewire/froswire which display a blank interface.
2) Anything that wants fullscreen access! I don't care for beryl when something is running fullscreen like a screensaver or games.
If I try to run UT2004 sometimes is doesn't switch to fullscreen properly, if it does well there's a performance hit as with any screensavers under KDE. I have an older Nvidia 6200 so it's noticable with a heavy screensaver like kcometen3.
My current solution is to just manually switch to kde's window manager with beryl-manager.
Surely there must be a way to disable "redrawing" on a per app basis? If not what do you guys do?

A simple export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit should work for this .

That's useful, matlab (also java interface) didn't want to work anymore with the latest beryl.
I suppose it's right to put that export in .bashrc?

In beryl there's setting to bypass fullscreen windows. I was running games in beryl fine
