Alright, got my system up and running today. At least, I thought I had until I ran into this problem.
My video play back doesn't work as it should. For some files, at least. With mplayer the picture is great, but the audio for some .avi files (at least, I haven't really tried many other file types) is weird. It's like some mix of static, voice com and recording. Think the Max Headroom hijacking video. The files were normal when I played them from my Ubuntu install. I suppose I could log in on it again to see if any corruption has gotten there as well, I'll do it after I post this (Edit: works fine in there!)
In totem, the picture doesn't work and the audio is the same as with mplayer. I haven't tried any other players yet. The codecs and the players are up to date. When I asked on IRC I got the advice to check the verbose audio output for errors, but found none.
This is some of the output:
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
Any ideas?
Edit: Apparently, it was the "dmix-fix" that caused the troubles. After removing it everything seems to work fine, at least this far. Opinion on Archlinux this far: very nice
