[SOLVED] Understanding font inconsistency between similar systems

I have two ArchLinux systems (a workstation and a laptop) that I try to keep configured as similarly as possible, with due differences (e.g. only the latter has a battery to monitor, for instance, the former uses Ethernet and the latter WiFi, and so on).

On both systems I have installed

• URxvt terminal emulator,

• ranger file manager,

• ranger_devicons plugin for Ranger file manager to use fancy icons. 

The visual result is this:

As regards ~/.Xresources it contains, among others, a line setting Urxvt.font, but apparently, in order to have the icons show in Ranger as in the above image, the two systems have to have a slightly different definition:

! system 1
URxvt.font: xft:DejaVuSansMono Nerd Font Mono:size=12,xft:Noto Color Emoji:size=12
! system 2
URxvt.font: xft:DejaVuSansM Nerd Font Mono:size=12,xft:Noto Color Emoji:size=12

With such divergent settings, in both systems I see the icons correctly, as per the screenshot above.

However, if on system 1/2 I change DejaVuSansMono/DejaVuSansM to DejaVuSansM/DejaVuSansMono and run

xrdb ~/.Xresources

I get replacement characters like this:

So my question is: why on system I have to have DejaVuSansM and on the other DejaVuSansMono to achieve the same result of showing the icons correctly?

I assume the reason might be related to different packages/fonts installed on the two systems, so

  - here's the diff between

pacman -Qi | sed '/^Name/!d;s/.*: //'

on the two systems,
  - here's the diff between

fc-list

on the two systems.

I have little xp with xft font settings, but on my system those 2 fonts resolve to different fonts.

Please post the output of

$ fc-match DejaVuSansMono
$ fc-match DejaVuSansM

for both systems.

The result is the same on both systems:

DejaVuSansMono.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Book"
NotoSans-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans" "Regular"

Installing noto fonts can screw up existing font settings. If the order in which you installed dejavu / noto was different that could be the reason.

Try removing all noto font packages except noto-fonts-emoji on system 2  .
Note that this is just for testing purposes.

It's only two packages, so I've just run

sudo pacman -R noto-fonts 

then I changed s/M/Mono/ in Xresrouces file, run xrdb ~/.Xresources, and opened a new ranger instance, and I still see the placeholders.

Besides, uninstalling this package breaks fzf, in the sense that when I launch it, it shuts down the whole terminal emulator (URxvt).

The missing glyphs there are provided by the nerd font patches, if you've the plain dejavu (resolved) it won't work and urxvt doesn't follow the fontconfig resolution cascade.

pacman -Qs dejavu

That's kinda the opposite of what one would expect.
Remove ttf-dejavu on both systems, install ttf-dejavu-nerd on system 1, check "fc-list | grep -i dejavu" and make sure to configure the nerd font on either

Remove ttf-dejavu on both systems, install ttf-dejavu-nerd on system 1

Done.

I've changed Mono to M in

URxvt.font:             xft:DejaVuSansMono Nerd Font Mono:size=12,xft:Noto Color Emoji:size=12

so now both systems have the same URxvt.font,

URxvt.font:             xft:DejaVuSansM Nerd Font Mono:size=12,xft:Noto Color Emoji:size=12

and yes, emojis work on both.

The answer is that "DejaVuSansM Nerd Font Mono" is correct for the font provided by the arch package but apparently you had/have a local nerd font instance in your $HOME (one one system) that's labeled "DejaVuSansMono Nerd Font"
Mystery solved \o/
I guess you want to ditch that copy?

You mean the single one you quoted from my previous message, or the whole /home/enrico/.local/share/fonts directory? I don't really know/remember why that directory is there.

I meant the additional NF copy specifically, but you can clean up your fonts any time any way you see fit

Based on wrong assumptions about the actual font name, which config would result in a failsafe resolution of DejaVu instead of any nerd font and on which system that's even available.
The explanation for the disparity was the NF in your $HOME

I'm asking here again because I suspect that the breakage I'm observing was concurrent with this one, but feel free to move this to a new thread, if that's expected in this case too.

I've used URxvt all along this thread. Today, I've opened XTerm, which I don't use normally, but open up whenever I want to check differences in behavior between URxvt and the more common XTerm.

So today I've opened it, and realized it doesn't really reflact the settings in ~/.Xresources; as far as XTerm goes, here's the content:

xterm.background: black
xterm.foreground: white
xterm.font: xft:DejaVuSansM Nerd Font Mono:size=12,xft:Noto Color Emoji:size=12

so I would expect at least that the background and forground are honored, but instead it opens with black/white fg/bg. Furthermore, if I open it from another shell, so I can see if it prints errors, it does indeed print this:

xterm: cannot load font "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1"

which looks to me like it's looking for a font somewhere else than from ~/.Xresources.

Why is this happening?

Yes, if I launch XTerm via

xterm -fg white -bg black -fs 14 -fa DejaVuSansMono

it uses the correct font and colors.

which suggested the font is correct? No, it isn't. Neither is the size. Nothing of what I wrote in the ~/.Xresources for XTerm seems to be applied.
