Freezes with GPU heavy applications and WLAN active (Intel, X61s)

Hi,

Indeed this is an old laptop and HW issues stemming from it's old age can not be ruled out smile.

But I'm having random(-ish) freezes on X61s (yes, the Lenovo Thinkpad from 2007). The issue is a bit similar to this old thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=245368 - however, not in all regards;

  • The hangs only happen with GPU intensive applications

  • ... and only if WiFi is on (radio on)

  • ... and, believe it or not, if I suspend once -> hangs do not happen!

These are hard lockups / freezes; the cmoputer is totally non-responsive, SysRQ does not work, only thing I can do is a forced poweroff.

I can not be totally sure about the third point since I can not reproduce hangs at will. They will happen after 5-30 minutes of GPU heavy usage. Especially the third point could hint at some power management issue / bug! This is my best lead in eliminating this issue, perhaps some module parameter for the 4965?

And as GPU "heavy" is a relative word, especially considering the power of this laptop, these activities include things such as:

  • Running some game (OpenXCom, UQM...)

  • Viewing OpenGL based music visualizations in Audacious

  • Running any of the cool xScreenSavers!

But hangs do not (seem) to ever happen if:

  • Browsing the net...

  • Playing Videos (YT, Twitch...)

I've already disabled pcie_aspm as it was suggested in the Ubuntu issue (linked in the older thread), however that did not solve the issue.

I am not using wpa_supplicant but iwd.

The computer is using an intel 4965 AG for it's WiFi and the GPU is an ancient i965 based one.

I have swapped the RAM (both sticks) several times and this had no effect on the issue.

System journal does not have anything of value, as the hangs just happen "at the middle of whatever being done at the time". No Kernel Panics, Oopsies or anything odd (AFAICT) are in the log. I could post the logs just in case I've missed something. Also, AFAIK the CAPS LOCK LED should blink if it's a kernel panic? It doesn't.

Any other ideas?

EDIT: As I'm writing this, I've suspended the laptop and keep running an OpenGL accelerated screenaver. No hangs! This is usually not possible for more than a few tens of minutes, but if it doesn't hang and just keeps on going... this is very peculiar. I just need to suspend once, or figure out whatever the PM management issue is which get disabled / fixed by a suspend big_smile

If an STR prevents it I'd look at that part of the journal and esp. pay attention to what the STR does to the wifi.
Do you btw, have to rfkill it (hard/soft?) or just not use it?
