the offlineimap3-git package assumes the source for offlineimap3 has a setup.py file. the upstream has since moved to using pyproject.toml.
i made a patch to offlineimap3-git aur package that switches to building using pyproject.toml. it now builds for me.
i'm hoping i can get the attention of the author, Pi-Yueh Chuan, to fix this in the AUR package. i would post a comment to the package page, but i can't make an account on AUR because of the recent malicious updates.
also, i've never made a patch to AUR before, so it's plausible i'm doing it wrong. if so, let me know!

Hey, thanks for the patch!
Unfortunately, AUR account registrations are currently disabled, so you can't post a comment on the package page or send an orphan request right now. Once registrations are enabled again, you should consider sending an orphan request if the maintainer remains inactive.
In the meantime, you could also try contacting maintainer by email if one is listed in the package metadata.

thanks for the help!
i tried making an AUR account and posting on the package page before emailing the maintainer, going to the arch wiki, irc, and finally here.
last commit was 2 years ago, so it seems plausible that person has moved on.
in the meantime, i'm using the patched offlineimap3-git and it's working great!
let me know if there's anything else you can think of for me to do.
do you have any sense of how long before the AUR account registration opens up again?

Unknown.
See aur general ML thread for a response from archlinux package maintainer Campbell Jones to that question .
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?

thanks again for the help. this forum is great! i wish i had noticed it when i was first installing.
i understand the heightened scrutiny and uncertainty around AUR.
i think at this point, i've done all i can and i just have to wait until AUR registration opens up so i can post a comment there, or the maintainer notices my email or the patch fixing PKGBUILD.
