Your loaded kernel module is different from your xorg driver. What versions of ati-fglrx and ati-fglrx-utils do you have installed? Try dropping down to console and running
sudo rmmod fglrx
sudo modprobe fglrx

I see the problem, I was just wondering if anyone else had seen it.
I should have ati-fglrx-utils 8.35.5-1 & ati-fglrx 8.35.5-1, that's what I just upgraded to.
I had to leave for work though so I can't access my machine until later.

Okay, if both the kernel module and utils updated, then it's most likely you simply still have the old kernel module loaded - the rmmod / modprobe thing should fix you up.

yep, it worked. I wonder why I've never had to reload the kernel module before when upgrading? Oh well, no big deal. Thanks Cerebral
