Pacman slow to upgrade

hi sorry if theres allready a thread discussing this, but I haven't found one so I'll ask here, lately when I upgrade I've been getting this error:

:: Synchronizing package databases... 
Control socket read failed: Success
error: cannot connect to ftp.archlinux.org

then when it does upgrade its slow to connect and slow to download, and continuously pauses in the middle of downloads making it incredibly slow going. Can anyone help me get pacman up to speed again?

that's a network issue .. it's been advised not to use the archlinux ftp server .. this is very overloaded , please use a mirror .. you may use `rankmirrors` to try and resort the mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/[current,extra,*]
