Pageflip timed out! This is a bug in the amdgpu kernel driver

Hi guys, gals... I am longtime archlinux user, but never registered in the forum. Previously I used Archlinux for many years ago for a long time, then switched to Kubuntu for some years, and now I am back to ArchLinux.
I have a serious issue with this bug, I can barely use my PC everything freezes with the message "Pageflip timed out! This is a bug in the amdgpu kernel driver"....
Things I tried, adding amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12 and its variants to grub, didnt solve it. I also tried switching the 6700XT for a rx 580, and guess what? the bug was also present! ffs
Also tried using an older kernel, some people report that with 6.6 or older kernels this doesnt happen, well it still happens for me,
This is driving nuts, I am considering buying new hardware! but what should I buy? it isnt the GPU, maybe a new mobo? I dont know what to do, I am desperate.
PLEASE HELP!

My setup: Ryzen 5700X, 24 gb ddr4, Gigabyte Aorus Pro b450, Asrock Challenger 6700XT

also I forgot to mention, but I believe it might be something with my power current, the house powerline setup maybe, I had a 850w PSU dying on me a couple of years ago, it only had 2 years... So I dont know if a new mobo will solve it. My hunch is that is causing signal noise in the displayport link between my monitor and the PC, I have a good quality certified DP cable.

There is nothing we can do. AMD gpu drivers have these instabilities going back for many years. No solution in sight, the engineers at AMD seems to be unable to fix it. Just take a look at the official bug tracker, it's a horror show:

Experienced some of those myself. Maybe you can find some workaround there for your hardware. Nothing helped me, though.
My solution is to never touch AMD hardware on linux ever again. Sorry.

Recent regressions seem to be driven by hdmi 2.1 support (and there was a massive firmware bug…) - do you get the same errors w/ the LTS kernel?

If you have any suspicions about the line power, I'd suggest getting an electrician and have them check it out first. It may be unrelated to the driver issue, but power issues are very serious and should be dealt with immediately.

I get my machines handed down from work and we use Dell+Intel CPU. However, we had to replace all/most of the AMD cards in our Windows workstations because of regular blue screens, which we/I narrowed down to the Windows amd gpu driver. We just switched to the Intel igpu and have had no problems since. Ironically, I'm using a couple of these cards in my Linux machines and they have been stable . In the past I used to see very frequent complaints about ryzen instabilities, but these seem to have subsided. However, amd gpus seem to be a problem point for many.

Sorry for the ramblings. Have you considered using a different cable, say HDMI? I have a 580 on sway using HDMI. I don't play games but normal desktop and movies work fine.

I mean yeah it can very well be a software issue, but at the same time many people that have this bug, eventually narrow it down to a hardware issue.... I've been dealing with tis like for 3 years, the bug comes and go, but I cannot narrow down which updates breaks or fix things.. Like I cannot narrow down if its a kernel or firmware update or some other package that fixes or break things, which makes me suspicious that it might be something external to my computer, maybe some failing capacitor on the mobo or something like that, which is failing because of voltage fluctuations because of bad line power in my home, i dont really know. Once a few years ago a PSU died on me, and maybe that affected the motherboard too?

"Everything freezes" kinda matches the page flip error, but that's a symptom, not a cause.

How much is "everything" - can you no longer switch the VT (ctrl+alt+F3)?

When running into this, avoid rebooting w/ the power button by use https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) + REISUB instead (nb. you'll first have to explicitly enable that)
Then please post your complete system journal for a boot covering this, eg.

sudo journalctl -b -1 | nc termbin.com 9999

for the previous ("-1") boot.

Also

might be relevant.

I can still switch to VT but I have to wait for the command to complete, its like watching wet paint dry, it freezes like the mouse will stop moving or the keyboard will stop typing, isnt that called a hard lock? but it isnt permanent if I wait the "lock" will stop, it isnt like a kernel ooops or kernel crash, that forces you to hard reboot... in any case I do reboot because rebooting is the only thing that can help, when rebooting sometimes the bug will stop occuring.

Now I am experimenting with amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x600 at grub, so far no bug for 3 hours, but I cannot be sure because its normal for the bug to dissapear for hours and then return. Its very random! (EDIT: as I suspected, the bug has returned after 3 or 4 hours)

also forgot to mention, things that I already tried, disabling Freesync (this monitor only supports Freesync) disabling HDR, already tried also using the HDMI instead the DP.

as an example this is how it looks when I cannot do anything at all with the computer, seems all its doing is crashing, with kwin wayland, every timeout of 1.5 or more seconds is a mini freeze. This can continue for many many minutes, maybe even hours, until a reboot fixes it but only temporaly... I cannot use the PC like this.

ok this is new, I am trying different kernels to see if I can find one that doesnt have this bug and with kernel 6.1.120 (edit and also with 6.1.188, latest lts for that branch) I get a different error

Bad page state? isnt that a deffective RAM issue? anyways I already memtested the ram and its fine.
EDIT: I continued testing with this kernel... and seems that the X11 version of KDE works just fine, its just kwin wayland which crashes.

for now with main arch linux kernel, I only seen happening once, but this is normal, it start to get serious after a couple of hours after booting, and then I am forced to reboot. Just rambling, but what if its a problem with thermals? that would explain, temp start to rise after a couple of hours and stuff starts crashing. Also its not always the case, but heavy load triggers the bug, like compiling a kernel.

The amount doesn't matter to check on the cause, but it's pretty pointless to investigate this when mesa thinks it's incompatible w/ the running kernel.

I cannot trigger the bug atm, I just added iommu=soft to grub, maybe that fixes it? I need to continue testing. It did happen on tkg linux 7.2.6, on my previous testings.

EDIT: now it happened again, but its not as bad as the other kernels...where I cannot use the computer, but it might be normal, bug is very random I need to continue testing to get a more meaningful log.
