Blender crashing with HIP enabled on an AMD GPU

Since last week, Blender crashes when I toggle the "Rendered" viewport shading (the most detailed one).

This only happens when (1) HIP is enabled and (2) AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT is used as the render device.

When the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU is used as the render device, it works.

Blender leaves a crash backtrace but it doesn't seem very useful:

I tried to explore the crash using GDB but... GDB is crashing:

---------------------
A fatal error internal to GDB has been detected, further
debugging is not possible. GDB will now terminate.

This happens with both Blender from the Arch repositories, and the bundled package from their website.

My system is fully updated as of now. I'd appreciate if anyone could share any tip, or just point me to the right general direction.

Re: Blender crashing with HIP enabled on an AMD GPU

blender(+0x1a5ee2b) [0x564ff9a69e2b]
/usr/lib/libc.so.6(+0x3e6f0) [0x7fde9d63e6f0]
/opt/rocm/lib/libamdhip64.so(+0x43d6b2) [0x7fdde863d6b2]

looks like blender raises an abort from libamdhip64.so

This only happens when (1) HIP is enabled and (2) AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT is used as the render device.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Blende … ce_drivers

Blender leaves a crash backtrace but it doesn't seem very useful:

blender and rocm are listed for https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Debuginfod
There hip-runtime which hopefully is just both (nvidia and AMD) binaries.

It looks like the crash is related to the HIP backend and the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT combination. Since the backtrace points to libamdhip64.so, it may be worth checking the ROCm version, Blender build, and whether the installed HIP runtime matches the GPU driver. Hopefully, a newer ROCm or Blender update can improve compatibility and prevent the abort issue.
