Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

How the issue occured:
I downloaded and opened up gnome-disk-utility thru yay
tried to mount a disk but all that happened was that my computer froze (possibly due to a separate issue) after rebooting gnome-disk-utility was not usable, couldn't be opened nor showed up on wofi. I tried to reinstall it but got hit with this error message

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

i tried to pacman -R the package but the package doesnt exist and redowloading it is not possible due to the issue

tried to troubleshoot and look for answers thru web all i found that was remotely useful was that usage of command:

pacman -Qo /etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.DiskUtilityNotify.desktop

gives the output:

error: No package owns /etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.DiskUtilityNotify.desktop

I'm sorry if the post is not up to standards/issue can be resolved easily but im a newbie and this is my last resort after trying to troubleshoot the issue for hours on my own. Thanks for any contributions/critiques upfront.

Re: Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

Re-install the package with

# pacman -S --overwrite '*' gnome-disk-utility

Re: Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

seems to have to worked halfway cause after that usage of

# gnome-disks

thru console, the output is

#gnome-disks: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libpwquality.so.1: file too short

the issue persists after trying to delete and reinstall it a couple of times my guess is that it needs a recursive pacman -R  command but im a bit scared if it will make my computer blow up so ima ask for confirmation

Re: Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

libpwquality should be re-installed as well.

For clarity, please show output of

# LC_ALL=C pacman -Qkk 2>&1 | grep 'checksum mismatch' | grep -v '^backup file:'

Re: Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

the command just runs for a litle while but gives no output, i got confused about the reason why would that be and checked

pacman -Q -k libpwquality
libpwquality: 0 total files, 0 missing files

so then i tried to reinstall it

warning: libpwquality-1.4.5-7 is up to date -- reinstalling

so then i used

sudo pacman -S --overwrite '*' libpwquality

which seems to have worked but now trying to run gnome-disks returns

gnome-disks: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libcrack.so.2: file too short

Single 'k' just checks presence of files, not consistency of their content.

gnome-disks: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libcrack.so.2: file too short

Looks like multiple packages are damaged. Run fsck on root filesystem to rule out its corruption.
Then run the command from #4 to check consistency of all installed packages. Re-install packages which files are corrupted.

Re: Broken package disallows downloading it again nor deleting it

sudo fsck -n /dev/sda2
fsck from util-linux 2.42.4

Warning!  /dev/sda2 is mounted.

/dev/sda2: 206699/2097152 files (0.1% non-contiguous), 2862079/8388608 blocks

then run

LC_ALL=C pacman -Qkk 2>&1 | grep 'checksum mismatch' | grep -v '^backup file:'
6 checksum mismatch)

but it didnt give me info on what packages have mismatching cheksums so i shortened the command to

LC_ALL=C pacman -Qkk 2>&1 | grep 'checksum mismatch'
backup file: filesystem: /etc/fstab (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
backup file: filesystem: /etc/group (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
backup file: filesystem: /etc/passwd (SHA256 checksum mismatch)

backup file: libpwquality: /etc/security/pwquality.conf (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
backup file: mkinitcpio: /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
backup file: pacman: /etc/pacman.conf (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
backup file: pacman-mirrorlist: /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist (SHA256 checksum mismatch)
6 checksum mismatch)

and those dont seem like they're either safe to reinstall or should cause the issue i tired other ways of checking the corruption
then i just bruteforced the process of checking which dependcy broke gnome-disks installing and reinstalling packages untill everything worked, so the gnome-disks works but i would love to know how to actually make sure the corruption is all fixed and wont cause issues in the future (an important thing to add that in between this issue arising (it was the only issue after rebooting right after the crash) and me checking the disk now i have come along a simmingly separate issue of drivers not being loaded on boot  that i just managed to resolve

Since your system was rebooted ungracefully after freeze, I'd recommend to force fsck from initramfs before rootfs is mounted or run fsck from Arch ISO.

majaacodin wrote:

Seems you forget to filter-out messages for backup (config) files. Nevermind, just post the output as @seth suggested.
However 'pacman -Qkk ...' will show corrupted files for packages which already registered as installed. If some aren't, you have stale files on filesystem not owned by any installed package.

Specifically for '/usr/lib/libcrack.so.2', is cracklib package installed?

$ pacman -Qkk cracklib
$ readlink /usr/lib/libcrack.so.2
$ sha256sum $(realpath /usr/lib/libcrack.so.2)
