[SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

After a new install on Dell Inspiron 8500 using 0.8 I am having a few problems and need a bit of help. One post suggested going back to ide-legacy for a similar problem, but I am not sure if this is the same problem and how I would go about this.

thanks in advance

Re: [SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

This is a bug in the kernel. Here is the bug http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8244. Here is the patch http://marc.info/?l=linux-ide&m=117548454130046&w=2.

Re: [SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

Two years later and I am getting this error. On initial boot cd/dvd works fine. I can play/burn a cd/dvd no problem. Soon as I eject the drive is no longer available until I reboot again. Kernel 2.6.33.2.  var/log/errors.log shows lots of revalidation failed and Buffer I/O error on device sr0.

Re: [SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

I was on my way to create a new thread because I can't see my several different DVD/CDROM drives. I tested several and strange thing is that I could burn data session with xfburn, but I can't see those drives in Thunar, neither mount umount them, from button in front panel it opens the tray. ??

I had also these in /var/log/errors.log

Re: [SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

My setup as follows:

dvd is HP dvd writer 1035r set as slave on ide.

I have an ide hard drive as master (used for Win) and two sata drives. The drives all function fine (except the ide's are configured as UDMA/33 because of the cable). I read somewhere there were some issues with atapi cd drives in the new linux setup where everything is masked to scsi, butof course I can't find that now.

The dvd worked fine until recently (I don't know when, I went through a period of months without burning any cd's and only occasionally needing to read one).

Re: [SOLVED] CDROM cannot be seen

I have discovered the problem was a defunct floppy. I disconnected it and now everything seems to be working fine. Haven't used it in a few years and it seems to have recently died on me.

For those too young to remember, a floppy was like the 8-track of audio recording.
