Anyway... I installed ARCH last night. Then I popped a slave drive into the box (ide) and it was AUTO-MOUNTED. I did not have to do anything to the fstab!!! what the? never seen that before.
It is mounted as if it were an external disk though. I guess I do need to edit the fstab to make it in /media or /mnt. Hrm... anyway.

That depends on your setup. Most distributions rely on the volume manager of the GUI, i. e. gnome-volume-manager, ivman, as does Arch, I think. The automounting happens in /media. Adding the drive permanently to your fstab will bring more order into this and is the better solution long term.
